In thinking on the demise of PC more,

PC has been my favorite stop on the internet since the Planet Happy days.  I know I haven't been coming here for as long as some of you guys have, but I have to say I've really enjoyed coming here.  I'm not a forum junkie, I don't go around arguing things all over the place, basically because most posters on other boards are morons.  But for the most part, I've always been able to come here and find, or lurk in, some reasonably intelligent conversation.

To all of the crappers, please keep the same name in other forums, so that we can know when I'm dealing with the elite of the internet forum goers, those of the late Planet Crap.

And to Morn, thanks for providing a place for us.  May all of your endeavors be as successful as this one was meaningful.

That being said, when I get home from work tonight, I plan on opening a bottle of Remy Martin VSOP, and as I pour myself a snifter, I'll pour a few drops out for Planet Crap.

Okay, I guess I owe you people an explanation of what's going on. I'm aware that some of you actually like this place, and I really appreciate that, so here goes.

Basically, as much as I like seeing you people hang out here and talk, PlanetCrap -- as a concept (well, uhm) -- just isn't what I want to do any longer. There just isn't much crap going on these days, and I don't want to just post anything that's remotely crappy just to fill this site. I also don't want the site to end up with only one update every two months. And when it comes to user submissions -- thanks to everyone who's taken the time to actually submit something, but when reading over the submitted stories, I rarely ever felt that interested. I'm not saying the stories were bad; it's just me, I'm just not as interested anymore. I also think that some people just spend way too much time worrying about stupid insignificant crap. It's just not my kind of crap bag anymore. ;-)

Of course there's the option of handing the site over to someone else, but I really don't want to do that. There was another site that did it the same way, and you all know what kind of ugly things happened then.

I'm working on some stuff right now that a) is eating away almost all of my time and b) would be good for a couple of PC topics itself, if you know what I mean.

Now, concerning PC's future...

I'm not shutting down PC because of bandwidth costs or anything like that, but really only just because of the reasons mentioned above. What that means is that there will be a new site. However, don't expect much; I'm basically returning to what I originally wanted to do with PlanetCrap way, way, waaayyyy back: running my own little weblog-style website. This will certainly be pretty boring for you people, because you'll only find me talking about game development and design, the Internet and other stuff I really don't know anything about. But there will be forums, so if you want to stick around and continue the usual discussions, you're all invited. And yes, there will be discussion topics linked to from the home page, but they'll probably be very "Morn", so if you didn't like me posting those AO topics here, you won't like the new site either.

<business plug>

As always, I'm working on some pretty funky stuff that even you may find useful. There are two projects, one of which game related, but unfortunately super-secret. The other one is good old Manouri, which will be back shortly (remember Manouri? It lets you create and maintain your own discussion/weblog websites through your browser, with no need to download or install anything, as it's all hosted on my servers). However, standard Manouri accounts will not be free any longer; there will be a two-week trial period, after which you'll have to pay a low monthly fee if you want to keep the site. Price is TBA, but it won't be much; just enough for me to cover Manouri's bandwidth fees. So if you're looking for a cool and inexpensive weblog/diary/discussion site/groupware tool, please do check out Manouri when it relaunches.

My new site will be using Manouri itself (because I'm lazy, and it's a good way to show what Manouri can do).

</business plug>

That is all I have to say about that. :)

huh. PC becomes a blog.

Well.  Thanks for the memories.

How many readers does PC have registered?  How many hits does it get a day?  If people are interested in keeping the community going you can setup accounts on the GA forums or planetblah (speaking for tsfr here but he said the same thing earlier).  Both forums are flat style like PC.  (Blah is closer to what PC is however and doesnt have the GA lime green color scheme.)  Also both sites are on fast pipes and I believe on fast enough hardware to handle the load.

I won't be pissed about anything. :)

The big difference will be that

a) the forums will be separated from the home page;

b) as in other "normal" forums, you'll be able to start your own threads (at least in some of the forums, it'll be a forum configuration option);

c) when I post something to my site's front page which I find worthy of discussion, I'll just start a new thread myself and link to it from the news/blog item. In fact, I'll probably be putting an option into Manouri that allows you to "link" a specific forum thread to a news/blog item, so the system can automatically add the "478 new comments" thing with a link.

Hrm... well, I'm sorry to hear that morn, especially the blog part, as that word alone elicits horror and gritted teeth from me, but I guess when it boils down to the dregs of the matter, well, it's your site. Moreover, becoming more involved in the industry is probably a Lum-ish sticking point, but hell... mind if we steal the PC source code, slap new colors and a title on the page? And since I've given up on explaining my sarcastic remarks as such, the last sentence was indeed, emoticon deserving.
