Raven's Quake 4?
July 27th 2001, 16:29 CEST by Morn

Computer & Video Games as well as FGN Online are both reporting that the next Quake game is apparently being developed by Raven Software (Soldier of Fortune, Elite Force). Thanks Enyak, Buccaneer and of course Blue's for the links.

We already make PainKeep Arena, there's no need for Quake IV, unless they're making a single person adventure extravaganza. Whoop!

P.S. Open Crap rules.

I'm a big fan of Raven's ability to make a compelling game. It amuses me to no end to think that while many of us were saying, "Man, Id sucks! They should hire someone to make cool games for them!" they were probably inking the contract for Q4. har.

So, the question is.. If this is all true - what kind of game is Q4 going to be? I have difficulties imagining a storybased FPS in the Quake 1 Gothic Universe, especially since they can't go too much into the sci-fi direction, as this would collide with DOOM 3.

Maybe it's just a Multiplayer Fragfest game ala Quake 3?

I wonder what iD Software wants to become. They are outsourcing more and more of their franchises and keep overlooking their client-developers. Are they turning themself into a publisher or into a middleware developer?

Hmmmm.... so Id is makes better engines, for worse games... and Raven makes better games, from Ids engines. I'm sure Id wouldn't mind the Ravens lads whoring the Quake name some more...

What's wrong with outsourcing the franchises? People are always screaming that id can't make more than a technology demo. I would imagine their hands are full with Doom.

The problem is and always has been Raven's shit levels.

Raven are a tech company. They take id-tech, add fixes to models, and put a medEVIL skin on, and call it a new game.

They do many good jobs. Weapon models... some textures... the "feel". But where they fucking SUCK are their levels, hideous, linear, fucking shit.

SOF and ELITE FORCE are two excellent examples of this.

EF are legendarily corridor, so look at SOF.

Look what happens in the first level of SOF. A cutscene. A limited moving train. Anything else?

What happens in the first level of Half Life? Or even SIN where you have an organised bank-robbery, abseiling assasins, etc?

Fucking hell... RAVEN and QUAKE == the third FUCKED Quake sequel.

fuck off -- the fucking lot of you

Hmm... I've never thought much of Raven; both SoF and Elite Force were only briefly entertaining before they sank into mindless mouse-clicking. And I think Quake3 is about the best thing since sliced bread. So this news is pretty distressing. :P

I know I might be in a minority but I liked Heretic II, even the levels. 8) Never player SoF and EF though.

It should be fun to see what they come up with at all for a Q4, no matter the execution of the idea later on.

I played through a bit of Heretic II, and liked it. Not super memorable, though - I wouldn't go back and play it today.

Judging a game to be released at least 1.5+ years in the future based on the developer is pure premature speculation at best. Of course.

Don’t forget their “big PS2 project”, so that’s four titles. I’m not sure if the idea of them working on four titles at once is all that settling to me.

The rest might as well be the same game with different skins.

We both agree (I assume) that Quake 3 rocked for the type of game that it wanted to be. We also both agree (again, I assume) that Quake 2 and Quake 3 were very different games. We agree again (and I may be giving you a lot of credit here) on the fact that Quake 4 is being developed by a different company than the previous Quake games. So how can you make a statement like that with no information about the game whatsoever?! Quake 4 could be a fucking monochrone platform flight simulator - we don't know!

Here, let me help you make some blanket statements:
1) Nothing with the Quake name will ever be any good.
2) Nothing Raven makes will ever be any good.

Jezza Witt: "Nothing Raven makes will ever be any good."

It's not so much that, but it is disappointing for me that Raven is making it, given the following:

a) I haven't liked two of their biggest and most recent games for very fundamental reasons.
b) id have a perfect track record at producing games that I adore.

Now do you see why I am less than giddy that the best franchise evar will be in the hands of someone other than the meisters at id? :)

Chella Kline Makes Mistakes (But Is Still Right)
Friday, July 27th 2001, 10:13 UTC | by Former GGG2Ger

Today we found out that Chella Kline, martyr-extrodinaire, is not who "she" claims to be.

In mid-July, she posted the following:

"In more personally humiliating news. I found out recently, that the Goon squad over at Planet Crap have stumbled across a web site I slapped together in an afternoon a long time ago, just to see how it worked. Hey, we all have skeletons in our closet right? I made the mistake of posting my old resume shot on this web page, and it seems this prompted discussion. Man, I feel violated. If the posters at Planet Crap weren't all gay I would expect stalkers."

The website and she refers to contains the following comment about Stevie "Killcreek" Case:

"I have a deep dislike for Killcreek, she really set women back in the game industry by volunteering to be masturbation fodder for a few thousand drooling Nerds that already see women as objects. [...] What a dumb bitch"

So it comes as a suprise to this journalist to find this version of her "resume" photo (and this one) on a site titled Classroom Chicks.

What do you think? Does this bother you?

The major concern I have is that the Quake "look" has been so dependent on Adrian Carmack and Kevin Cloud's work (and Kenn Scott's, for Q3). Raven has a fine stable of texture artists, but their work to date has not been remotely Quake-y.

I must agree with concerns about level design and gameflow, also. I beat Elite Force in nine hours, and wasn't that enthused with it. I couldn't even get through Soldier of Fortune, because the gameplay became so repetative by the fourth or fifth level.

Dunno... I don't really have much more to say. There was a time in my life when "Quake4" would've meant a lot to me. But so many games have surpassed the series on just about every level (including prettiness, since id's own engine licensees have outdone them at least twice), that it's not as exciting to me as it might otherwise have been.

Don't forget EF was aimed at a mainstream audience due to the Star Trek license, so it was supposed to be linear and easy to get in to. Quake 4 on the other hand, if it's even coming ever, would be aimed at a much more hardcore crowd. I'd hope it'd use the old Q3A tech though. That hasn't even been fully tapped yet. No need to send people screaming to the store for a GeForce 3 yet.

I just want a game in the near future that can have some kind of insight to share. That's all. And Doom 3.

As for Ms. Kline, is that woman in the picture her or not? It would seem so, but I'm curious.

Raven's SP games have not been that great; I was ready to buy SOF until I played the demo. Similary EF was really fun in parts but too linear (yeah that was on purpose blah blah blah).

But I gotta say that EF Multiplayer is awesome; much better than vanilla q3 (but not as good as painkeep (:->)). If Quake4 is a super-duper multiplayer game, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

YES YES, We need more brown and grey !!! Bring back all the brown and grey!!!!!.

I think iD set a new record in Q1 and Q2 for the most variations on two colors I've ever seen. I wonder if some of the guys at iD are color blind and may not even know their doing it...

Gyruss -

Go back, pay through Q2 again, and notice that every color of the spectrum is represented in it. There's plenty of greens, purples, blues, oranges, reds and yellows, in addition to the browns and greys.

The textures for Q3 also contain all sorts of colors.
