Argh!
June 8th 2001, 20:17 CEST by Morn

You've already started talking about the interesting stuff (DMC, the B&W "developer" patch and other crap), so here's some uninteresting tech info regarding the problems with PlanetCrap and some of its neighbour sites:

» The SDSL line that's connecting el Planeta de la Mierda and my other sites to the net is having some stability problems. After some time there is up to 90% packet loss until I reset the SDSL modem; unfortunately, I'm not always around to do that, so sometimes things are slow for a while until I wake up/get home/both.

» For some weird reason, some of my domains (the one's I registered through goold old Network Solutions) haven't been updated yet. Two of them are developium.com and .net, which some of you may be using to access the #planetcrap IRC channel. You should be able to get there by simply connecting to irc.planetcrap.com instead.

» I love you all! *group hug*

I'm telling you Morn, download the free packet sniffer Ethereal and get a logged capture going...you aren't going to get any results if you can't see what is happening at the interface. Something has to be utilizing it, assuming that your traffic isn't *all* inbound, then I'd start searching for a zombie bot that is used for DDOS attacks. Because one-sided (outbound traffic only) kind of behavior indicates that you've been comprimised. Just do a netstat looking for open connections to irc servers....that's how those bots are managed.

I've said too much!

If your interested in learning more about zombies, www.grc.com just got nailed by some, and the site owner took it upon himself to find out everything he could about them.  As Desiato suggests, its a pretty good introduction. Unfortunately, it seems to be down, for the moment at least. Interestingly, even if you're infected, he found all you need to keep one from doing it's dirty work is a copy of zone alarm.

Nah, data is getting lost between my SDSL hardware and whatever it is connected to on the other side. I can unplug it for a second and then plug it back in and everything's back to normal (and no, I'm not getting a new IP or something). And then, after a couple of hours, it starts again (usually just after I've gone to bed). :/

DMC?  B&W developer patch?  What?
I must check the front page at least once a day to see if there's a new topic.  I stop reading the threads after message #200 or so because it tends to be the same stuff repeated.  Can't we get some kind of middle ground between the last version of the crap where people could add so many stupid new topics it was almost useless, and this current incarnation where we get a new topic every two weeks?
What's this about a B&W developer patch?

Morn-

I accept full and complete responsibility :)

Rest of you -

Morn is having a problem endemic to SDSL.  SDSL is horribly error-intolerant, and warm temperatures here in the northern hemispehere can cause SDSL transceivers to error like mad.

My first suggestion would be to open the case of your modem and put a big-ass fan blowing on it.

If that doesn't work, call your provider and tell them to provide adequate cooling at their end.

Ah, the old Wang... that was the funniest named computer company ever. Back when I first started where I work, there was no network, just the mainframe, island PC's (286) and a bunch old WANGS. The secretary loved the wangs. They did most of their work with Wangs. Any secretary would tell you that a Wang was much better than a typewriter! Yes, after learning how to control a wang, ask any secretary whould she rather play with a typewriter or a Wang, and the answer was always "I love Wangs!"

#7 by Desiato "I'm telling you Morn, download the free packet sniffer Ethereal..."
I agree with the dead guy, morn. The packet sniffer is good for a lot more than antiintrusion.

I second THAT motion as well, and devoted a post to them last Tuesday. It seems a thirteen year old brought them down for RUMORS (untrue) that Gibson used the term "script kiddie". The tale of the dDOS is fascinating, and Gibson is at least as good a writer as he is an engineer.

The grc site isn't down, only the shieldsup facility. I mailed them asking when it would be back up, and they responded that it would be a few more days.

Shieldsup sort of checks to see if your cyber zipper is down... Joker, don't let your Wang get taken over by some little puke with his BackOrifice program (the cDc makes backorifice)

I believe that Paul was referring to the 4th Amendment. However, I have to disagree with him if he thinks a sobriety checkpoint is "unreasonable". I don't believe that being momentarily inconvenienced in the name of public safety can be described as a loss of freedom.

Warren, when I was living in florida there was s "sobriety" checkpoint early in the morning. Anybody drunk at 8:00 AM is not likely to be driving reasonably. I waited forty five minutes in line behind a string of other sober people (at least I saw no one being shackled) to show my driver's license and registration, before I was allowed to go and BE LATE TO WORK.

"Your paperss pleass" was the laugh-in joke in 1968

It's called "prior restraint".

Hundreds of thousands of eighteen and nineteen year olds died for your freedom. I think it is disgusting that your comments about the lack of freedom's worth come just days after the anniversary of D Day. My late Uncle was at Normandy. He was killed by the Phillip Morris corporation, not the Nazis. But here you are fifty years after D-day welcoming in a new American Nazi regime.

If you are weaving, speeding, running red lights, then you should be pulled over. Otherwise you should be left alone.

If you want security at the price of freedom, please move to China, North Korea, or Singapore.

And yes, putting up with assholes like Dinglehoffen is also the price of freedom. I can live with that.

mcgrew is right.  If you disagree, please move to another country not founded on the idea of personal liberty over almost anything else.  It's okay to disagree - just please don't ruin things here in the US for those of us who don't have a need for the government to play nanny.  There's plenty of alternatives besides the countries he mentioned too - UK seems to be well on it's way there, and most of you won't stick out there as much as you would in asia.

This whole thing about sobriety stops reminded me of the coming red-light camera plague. I don't know about european drivers, but in the US it is very common to be in the intersection a second or so if you are making a left turn. The light just changed, people have just cleared the intersection -- then you can finally make your turn, or you're trapped with people honking at you. Well - with one of these cameras, they just snap a picture and send you a ticket. Sounds like a tollroad without the necessity of human staff to run it. Oh - and at $50 (USD) or higher per ticket, you can bet cities are looking at these things with watering mouths and open checkbooks.

Dammit.

So what? Maybe I could end like one of Dickens' characters, still clutching his coins in his coffin; or maybe even Steinbeck's, in which the character must consider a moral resolve. However, it could be even a London ending, with one character learning the atavistic behavior of humanity; or even a Krakauer epic - vanishing. What a way to go!

sobriety checkpoints are wrong simply because they operate under the "guilty until proven innocent" assumption. this is not to say i approve of drunk drivers plowing into school buses or mowing down old ladies. this is to say if you let it happen, where does it end? because hey, if they can put up one, well, why not put up more? why not put up a roadblock at every street light? gotta keep the citizens safe, after all.

re: Checkpoints.

I totally disagree with checkpoints, especially since they lowered the Blood alcohol limit in texas (and most states nationwide) to .08 under pressure from MADD with no scientific data to back it up.

Anyone ever heard of someone getting into a horrible drunk driving accident and you read in the papers later that their blood alcohol level was .08?  its always .15 or higher.  Most drunk driving accidents are caused by habitual drinkers/drunk drivers, not people who have two beers with dinner at razoos and can hit .08.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a real nazi about drinking and driving, I don't believe its EVER ok.  But checkpoints + continuing to lower the blood alcohol limit are going to punish regular people, not the people who actually are a menace on the road.
