The animation of the injured soldier coming into HQ, looked a bit.. well, limp.

Anyway, most impressive to me were the character models. They all remembered to blink their highresolution textured eyes every now and then. :)

Music:

Ok, one thing I just noticed is that according to the credits shot, the cool music in the trailer was actually done by David Arkenstone. Lee Jackson composed the original theme AFAIK, but he didn't do any of the music in the trailer. Since Arkenstone was probably hired just for the trailer, and Jackson does the actual game music it remains to be seen whether or not he'll be able to sustain that high level of quality. On the other hand... if he was, why exactly did 3DRealms have to hire an outsider to score the trailer?

All I can say is, (well beyond what I have already said) why no Duke smacktalk in the video?  It was one of the things that set Duke apart and most Duke fans really really love about the game.

Don't doubt the talents of Lee Jackson. All of this is in my opinion, of course, but he is definitely on my top ten list for game music composers, along with Bobby Prince.

Second post and already a curt dismissal. I love this place! :P

I think the video shows a good balance between capturing the sophistication of a game like Half-Life (still the most obvious benchmark for a FPS single player experience) and the sensibility of Duke from D3D -- in your face carnage, the inevitable strippers, the foot, etc. The models look great and the blinking eyes are a nice touch. The detail of the game will really help set it apart from so many FPS games we've seen lately. Now, if DNF multiplayer is as fun as Duke3D's, I'm set. :)

Also Yasunori Mitsuda, who composed the scores for a few Square games, like Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, and Xenogears.

I'd have to add Rob King, who did the music for Heroes of Might and Magic II (yes I had to look him up).

The two games are very different, because in Planescape: Torment, there was a lot of role-playing, while Icewind Dale concentrates on being a dungeon crawl hack and slash game. I rather enjoyed it though, but I liked Torment much better.

Back to Final Fantasy IX for me. :)

Hoo boy, anyone feel like picking up where Andy left off?  There's finally some genuine crap to report on in the online gaming world.

First, pick a side.  Either side.  Next, accuse the other side of incompetence and malfeasance.  Not to mention impropriety in taking their gripes public.

For example:  Valve's Gabe Newell took the time and trouble to allay gamer's concerns about the single player version of Counter Strike in a rare public statement...   Or, Valve's Gabe Newell did his best to control damage in comments in the VoodooExtreme forum.  Guess that's why he doesn't come out from under his rock too often, direct sunlight burns...

I'd do it, but I feel really lazy tonight and also hope to work with all of these people someday =)

I saw the video in between shots of a bunch of blonde chicks and their asses on the big screen at the GOD booth, and again in their trailer (and, actually, the day before on Hellchick's monitor, for that matter).

DNF's looking pretty spiffy. I suspect it'll probably be the best pc game that comes out this year. I just wish I, you know... actually liked Duke himself. It would make the game a lot more appealing to me.

On a side note, this is the weakest of the four E3s I have either read about or attended. I could find nothing showstopping in either appearance or execution (this is where loonyboi and Warren tell me I'm out of my mind, or just jaded beyond all belief, and then Desiato makes fun of where I work).

The best thing at E3 was whoever did the screaming at the beginning of the Max Payne movie. FANTASTIC voice work. Much better than your normal cheese-shit voice acting that plagues every PC game not released by Blizzard.

my feet stink.  man.

oky, about the video... see i just got back from Tech, so my nice new P3 800 is sitting back in my room, unconnected from the internet, serving as a $2000 cd player.  So i'm forced to use THIS peice of shit p133 to do anything, cause its got a cable modem.

as soon as my netgear rt314 4 port router gets here, however, things will be different.

what was I talking about?  oh yeah the video.   anyways so i downloaded the video, all 46 megs of it, at a whopping 6.7 K/s  (way to go morn), took me one hour and 57 minutes.  So I goto play it, and windows media player gives me an error saying the format is not supported.  So then i go download WMP 7.0 and that wont play it either.  so then i realize its a .MOV file, so i download apple quick time, and yay, finally it will load.  oh, but then since

MY COMPUTER SUCKS SO FUCKING MUCH,

i only get to see a frame like every 7 seconds or so, and the audio freezes at about the same frequency, so, yeah, i didnt enjoy the video at all.

but, it does look nice.

oh, and my feet stink.  i mean damn.

Technically?  Looks good enough; about what you'd expect from the years of work.  But other than as a bit of graphics sizzle, it's hard to take seriously.  First, it's a pantingly desperate rip-off of just about every action movie of the past ten years -- and that gives it a kind of amateurish, wannabee feel, as if you had this group of geeks trying like hell to prove that they can make a movie, too.  Save the president!  Whoa, imagine!  And then there's the way its pandering after strippers and the Vegas mystique doesn't feel cool or intelligent, just sort of...heh...white trash.  I reckon it will grab the fourteen year olds, though, who are eager to see strippers in Direct X.

No kidding.  There really isn't anything that mindblowing.  We've seen MGS2 already.  Silent Hill 2 looked good, but really grainy on the ps2.  Hopefully it will be improved for the xbox.

So far the only "Wow" games (and some barely at that)  I've seen are
Dungeon Seige
The GC Starwars game
Luigi's mansion
Munch's oddysee
the single player version of Halo (multi = chunky)
fusion something (xbox party game)
Jet Grind Radio Future
Freedom Force (really impressed with this).

Most of the rest of the stuff has been shown at previous e3's or was not impressive.  And why the hell isn't infogrames showing Independance War 2?

other things that i'm now looking forward to:

Kingdom Hearts, Time Crisis 2, Capcom Vs SNK 2, THPS3, Virtua Tennis 2, Wave Race, plus there was a bunch of misc shit like Namco confirming SC2/T4,  PSO for Gamecube, plus all the GBA stuff like Metroid, Wario, Street Fighter Alpha 3.

most of the xbox stuff isnt impressing me, i sort of expected fsaa high polygon madness (you know, like you get on a Geforce 3 in 640x480 on a pc), but instead got port and games that would get outshadowed by doom3 (uw). ;)

SMASH BROTHERS!!! I am for sure getting a Gamecube now. The game looks fantastic and they kept the gameplay intact.

I hope the Gamecube is cheap, somewhere under 200 bucks. And I hope the Wavebrid is cheap too because I do not want to deal with cables all the time. I probably would buy Luigi's Mansion too, for my brothers

I have yet to be signifigantly impressed by the other consoles. For the DC I would get NBA 2k2 and PSO ver 2.

Something just occured to me. If Max Payne's success is partly the "positioning" of it, why did they (as far as I can tell) kinda screw the chances of people giving the video for it a fair chance by releasing it at the same time as the Duke one? It would be interesting to see the difference in the number of downloads between the two of them. Seems like it would've made more sense to release the Max Payne video a couple days earlier.

I have to say that Las Vegas looks great and that the game itself might be fun.

But the faces of the characters creep me out. The only parts that move are the eyes and mouths. I got more of a sense of emotion from the SNES Final Fantasy games where happiness was conveyed by the characters jumping in the air and spinning around.

The scared girl reminded me of the MST3K version of Alien From L.A. In the host break they discussed how every expression Kathy Ireland had was really just "dull surprise."

The vending machine and the pinball game seemed out of place in the trailer. Shenmuke Nukem?

Overall, I like the attention to detail in the maps, but the trailer itself looks like it was put together by a feature happy marketer. The problem is the features aren't revolutionary. How about some idea of the plot of the game to go along with your movie credits at the end? The general's speech didn't really say much other than "are you a bad enough dude to save President Ronnie?"

Nah, you could do a lot of crap in DN3D (although quite limited since the game is quite old now) so I think that things like this is perfectly ok in DNF.
