GameSpy Redefines Maths! (was: Play More Subspace!)
April 17th 2001, 20:49 CEST by Morn

It's late, and it's time for a new thread, so how about some old-fashioned GSI bashing? Well, I'm just kidding. To be honest, I simply felt like posting a little non-discussion thread about Subspace, a somewhat dated but amazingly fun multiplayer space shooter. The game was made by Harmless Games (who're also responsible for the technologically somewhat more impressive, but not as fun 2D tactical action game Infantry) and was meant to be published by Virgin Interactive, who unfortunately dropped the game while being in open beta testing. The game is now available for free, with servers run by Subspace enthusiasts. And it still rocks.

Oh, and regarding the GSI bashing -- I just really liked the following quote from their preview of Cosmic Rift, a game you could call "a Subspace clone" -- heck, it looks so similar to Subspace, it might just have been developed by the same people:

Remember Sub-Space? Now increase the number of players exponentially and you'll get the idea of the magnitude of Cosmic Rift Online. "A single arena can have up to 200 people in it," explains Producer Rob Hill.

Oh feck it, I sound like a right Subspace fanboy. But considering that Subspace games easily handle 250+ players, now we all finally know why GameSpy never publishes the authors' email addresses. Fools! FOOLS!

In Subspace, nobody can hear you compute!

I used to enjoy a game of SubSpace back in 1996. I thought it actually went commercial though? I had an interview at VIE (just before the EA takeover- lucky escape there) in 1998, and they were on about the piracy problems they were having with the servers.
Still, it's better than Westwood's "Subspace meets C&C" game, Sole Survivor. Nice idea, awfully executed.

Damn, if they'd have mentioned this on April 1st, i'd be laughing; now i'm just sad.

From what I've seen, those 250+ people are rarely in the same arena. They may be on the same server, but not the same arena. At least not on TrenchWars (where I hang out).

Subspace is cool.

But it was published in stores. I distinctly remember seeing it at Best Buy. But I never heard of Infantry being released; last I heard they were still working on it. I guess by the time it came out, no one cared.

Oh well, if Subspace is free now I will have to get it again.

Infantry is here. Don't know for sure, but given that the people that made Infantry made Sub-Space and Infantry and Cosmic Rift are both at The Station, maybe the developers of Sub-Space worked on Cosmic Rift...

GameSpy SUCKS! ;)

And subspace was rox0r, till they wanted money for it. Didn't have quite enough depth to be worth paying for. For the record, though, I concur with grey: I never saw anywhere near 250 people in one arena.

Okay, various stuff: re 250 players, yeah, they were spread over seperate arenas, but still on one single server/in one single game. I was assuming the preview talked about servers, but maybe I'm wrong. Even then there are Subspace games/servers with roughly 100 people in a single arena (with a couple of people duelling in seperate arenas). But maybe I'm just dumb. Either way, see if I care. I just wanted to get shaithis to post again. :P

From the developer interview it sounds like CR is being developed by one of the ex-Subspace guys (although I didn't see any mention of Harmless Games). That may be a good thing. Let's try it out, shall we? :)

Subspace was, and still is, an amazing little game.

For a long while it was totally free. Then it went retail. Soon after, VIE decided it would be a good idea to shut down the official Subspace servers (those bastards). The game faded into relative obscurity. And now we've come full circle... free again.

Does anybody remember defending J12? If the term "J12" has no relevance to you, I hate you (in a nice way).

I bought "Flying Heroes" for $2 a couple weeks ago. There's a Jefferson I'll never get back. Man.

How much does the price affect the performance of a game for you all? I remember all the whining, excuse me, disgruntlement with the Q3A expansion pack costing anything at all. I enjoyed it, though it was a gift.

Buying the Universal Military Simulator II for like $55 years after it's release has to be the low point in my game consumer history.

It appears to be true. This letter from Surfas on the RadioSpy site explains it, sort of. Although he claims to have "never taken any venture capital" in the letter, I could swear I read an article somewhere, maybe even here on PC, about GSI receiving a few million from Michael Ovitz.

Maybe I'm thinking of something else. I can't really remember, to be honest.
