PlanetCrap is coming home
April 4th 2001, 22:09 CEST by Morn

Ack! Sorry about the recent lack of updates. Not only have I been busy, I've also been <i>sick</i>. Gah! Anyway, I bring news regarding PlanetCrap: as you know, I'm not making any money off this or any of my other sites, yadda yadda, no, I'm not going to ask for donations. <i>But</i>, in order to reduce costs, I'll be moving everything on this server to my living room, which will soon be outfitted with a 2.3mbit line (w00!). Yup, I'll be hosting everything right from the fiery depths of the Mornster Cave (tm), which, obviously, will have some advantages as well as some disadvantages.

The biggest advantage is, of course, that I have much more control over the money this little hobby costs me. On this server here, I'm paying for used bandwidth -- I spent a long time looking for a <i>good</i> deal, but traffic keeps rising, and things are bound to get too expensive soon. For my sexy 2.3mbit line I managed to get an <i>amazing</i> deal (especially for German standards) where I'm playing a flat fee for everything, including all traffic. Hurray!

Well, now that I've mentioned Germany... here's the big (?) disadvantage: the site may soon be a little bit slower for you non-Europeons. I believe you won't notice much of a difference unless you're on a huge connection yourself, but hey, that's how the net works.

But, oh well... things would be different if I was making a fortune off my sites, but as things are looking right now, you'll just have to live with 150ms instead of 50ms round trip times. :-)

Hell, why don'tcha just place 340 banners on PC, and add a few pop-ups as well... that oughta make you some money :) (and rid you of that annoying high hitcount!)

Since I live in the Netherlands, and my internet connection always licks dick, no matter how good a server is, I don't expect the server switching to have any effect on my reception of PlanetCrap.

Too bad there isn't a way a-la-Freenet to have a distributed website. Of course it would depend on people not turning off their computers (removing nodes) and having a connection that could handle some modest traffic, but it would certainly be more advantageous than having to fork over D-Marks for a big pipe to your living room. It isn't like I'm going to write it. Heh. Just a pie-in-the-sky idea.

On the subject of B&W, I've heard some fatbabies kvetching about how the game runs some kind of integretity check with an EA server every time you want to run the game, prompting the complainer to bring B&W back to a software retailer for a refund (privacy paranoid).  Is this true?  I kinda miss the old days of copy protection, that is searching for letter 5 of word 10 in paragraph 2 of the instruction manual.

According to lionhead it simply says your online for the messaging features. They also call the program 'self-aware' so it's likly warez versions would dissable some features after finding that it is in fact a warez copy. Of course I don't see a major difference between this and say Q3A's authentication server. The every time you want to play could come from the fact that you must enter your area code/zip code for the game to work (used for the weather effects).

So the complantent probably seen that it wanted his area code for the effects and simply assumed it was trying to dial out to an ea server based on that.

Now does any one else think it's odd that just last night we where talking about morn monitoring our brain waves via satilite, now the PC server will be moved to his living room? ARRRG I tell you we must stop him!

Actually, the program does have a check for the warezed versions. If you have a warez version it logs your IP and I believe you can't play the game after that.

You sound like you're a jade man sitting in a jade chair looking at your jade-encrusted watch, wondering when you'll get out of your jaded office to spend your weekly check of rough-cut jades.

Games can be fun, but it requires some effort by the gamer to give a crap in the first place.

Ah forget it, go spend your jades.

Thanks bob I was a little confused about what they ment by 'self-aware' in the first place. But it's still nothing major over a authentication server, and not even an issuse if you can in fact return the game some where.

I wonder how many people that disslike there IP address getting out online cover up their house number, licence plate, or don't put a return address on stuff they mail. All of these are public numbers, but people give little thought to any of them other then their IP address (gees if your so damn woried about some one geting is use a damn firewall, it's not like cost is even an issuse there any more).

Hey Warren, I know this is a bad place to try and get some unrealed support, but I don't want to bother you with an e-mail.  My problem is this: I can't zoom or strafe within the editor.  When I hold both mouse buttons down and try to slide or zoom, all I get is either no motion, or the right-click menu.  I'm running win2k pro, a simple ps2 logitech wheel mouse running mouseware 9.26, and UT version 436 with the command line packager patch.

The bigest problem for a site that's mainly a message board is the lag time for the nodes to be updated. In a heated debate that would be the major threat. Say I have a fast connection to one node, however there's conjestion between that one and the ones feeding it, it'd be likly I end up notified of new post out of the order they where acctauly posted in. So post 29 gets there first so crapspy tell me there is a new post, but 28 hasn't gotten to that node just yet.

Heck it may not not a major problem for a normal disscussion site where the post are more spread out over the avalible threads, but here I have my concerns.

B&W?  Can't say I agree.  I do agree that it's repetitive and won't be The Sims....but....it's amazingly addictive and sucked me in for the first 20 hours before I could blink.

I can see it not appealing to all, but with the way the creature works, and the depth of the world that you continue to discover as you experiment...I can't see most people not liking it to some degree.  Kids can play it as they don't really have to advance the story, and die hards can blaze through it.  It appeals to just about everyone and the only real issue is the controls.  Their complexity will keep it away from casual gamers I think.

But all in all, it's one of the best games I've ever played and a breath of fresh air and something "different".  How rare is that?

I only wish there was a line of B&W creature action figures.  Someone dropped the ball on that one.

None of this is true. Your area code is not required to play the game. And using a warez version doesn't actively disable any features, rather you just won't be able to play multiplayer due to not having a unique serial key.

Not true. This functionality is not built into the program (and really how could it be?). However Lionhead staff could most likely log ips on the authentication server based on some criteria they've drawn up.

In some ways it is, most of them nostalgic. Black & White is really just an evolution of Populous'. Obviously Populous was a simpler game, which is either a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your outlook, but B&W was the natural progression. And the fact that two threads have been hijacked to discuss B&W indicates that for or better or worse it is an influential game.

#38 "G-Man" wrote...

This is unworkable, because anyone playing on an analog or ISDN modem is going to be assigned a different IP each time they connect. If it matched your serial number against your IP, then you'd only ever be able to play once on a modem - the next time you connect your IP will be different, so it'll assume that you're a warez monkey. Unless by pure chance you're assigned the same IP twice in a row.

You only say that 'cause you haven't gotten to level 5 yet.

The "game" is very interesting, extremely well put together, and certainly holds your attention for quite a while.  But once the initial facination wears off, and once you start to get a real understanding of how to succeed, Black and White becomes a lot more ordinary and, dare I say, tedious.

Keep in mind, this takes hours, maybe days.  But it does happen.  I used "game" in quotes because I firmly believe that any game elements were tacked on at the end in order to convince some people that it was, indeed, a game of some sorts.  The challenges you have to go through are quite absurd, and the fact that a huge, huge bug went completely unnoticed through what was otherwise exceptional QA speaks to this more than anything else.

* SMALL SPOILER *
The bug I am referring to is that your creature remains cursed on level 5 even after you remove the object causing the curse, and even after the game informs you that the curse has been removed.  The curse is stuck on your creature and exists in any multiplayer or skirmishes you play.
* END SPOILER *

Quite rare, and it's nice to see some people come out and do something that is initially so different from the norm.  I would hardly call it one of the best games I've ever played, and I think you shouldn't be so hasty until you've played it more (after all, I can still pick up a game of Civilization 2 and play it for hours today wihtout getting bored at all - that ranks pretty high in my book.  I'm not sure if you'll even want to bother with Black and White in a month.)

I think people are being a little too orgasmic about this game, far too soon.  Let's not canonize it just yet.

Somehow I don't think it will be long before the B&W merchandise comes along. Heck, we're going to be getting a TV series based on The Sims, so lord only knows what will come out of B&W.

I think B&W is great, but after playing it all weekend I've gone back to Skies of Arcadia. Once I've finished that, I'm sure i'll jump right back into B&W and love it.

Meanwhile, am I the only one that has a Logitech iFeel mouse to use with this game? Lionhead made a really big deal out of the game's support for this (the two characters even talk about it when the game starts!) but I just don't see why anyone would want to use it.
