GeForce 3, Doom III, oh my!
February 22nd 2001, 14:23 MSK by Morn This is all over the web, so it can't hurt if we mention it here as well. This RealVideo movie of Steve Jobs' MacWorld keynote contains, yes, (supposedly) real-time footage of id's Doom III (running on nVidia's new GeForce 3, also known as NV20). And boy oh boy, does it looks nice! You can find more info on the Shack, VoodooExtreme, Blue's news and very likely every other gaming site on the planet. Also thanks to everyone who emailed/ICQ'd us about this. |

Chella I might leave before you get a chance to ploink me. Hahaha, yeah, OK ... fat chance of that happening. As you like to continually remind us: you aren't going anywhere. You won't leave. You enjoy the attention you get WAY too much. |
#284, deadlock -- you summed up id's situation perfectly, IMO. I am guardedly optimistic that they will make the next Doom something that will be very entertaining. Whether it really pushes forward the FPS genre is another question (how one pushes forward the FPS genre is yet another question -- and one that might net some interesting answers, too). Could someone explain to me the subtle difference between "plonking" versus "ploinking" someone? |
Could someone explain to me the subtle difference between "plonking" versus "ploinking" someone? Plonking - The act of placeing some one on ingnore Ploinking - Threatening to place some one on ignore, but not acctauly commiting the act. I hope I didn't get those backwards. |
Ned; i'm optimistic that they'll do it as well. I'd imagine that id are fairly aware of this as well - they've always kept one eye on the community (not just their own fanbase) so I think they know what people's expectations are. That's not to say that id should develop Doom in a particular way just because people 'demand' it. But I think they're aware that it needs to be something special if they're to throw off this notion that people are beginning to attach to them, the one that casts them as engine builders rather than game builders As for 'plonking' vs 'ploinking', i think they're both the same thing. Some people use ploink, others plonk. Me ? I use 'plionk' cos (cue italian-american-mafioso-stlye-clichèd accent) that's the kinda guy i am. deadlock |
Okay, let's make this all real simple. Let's write up a list of people that get treated certain ways because of who they are. First list. People you don't have to argue with, just get personal. Chella Kline Next list. People that will take personal offense a broad comments and then say rude things about the person on the first list. Jason. Next list. People that think a Troll is somebody with an opinion different then theirs and will censors such people as soon as Crap Spy is available. Damn near everybody but Chella Kline Next list. People accused of being duplicitous by posting under their real name Chella Kline Next list. People that should never have questions asked about their opinions. Katherine Anne Kang (or Mrs. John Carmack, but this has nothing whatsoever to do with her anticipation of the up coming Doom game) You Silly guys always get personal with me. Yet it does not offend me. Mostly because you are a bunch of losers, but also because you can never come up with an argument to my point of view. I feel I should point out, the argument I made about the new Doom game (Not impressed, ID does eye candy well, but they don't seem to be able to pull game play out of their asses), was practically repeated by Warren Wussboy Marshalllllll (there are a few extra "L's" for the times I forget) and everybody nodded at his sage wisdom. Yet the same comment got me labeled "Troll" and cause Wussboy to inform me I was going to be his first Ploinkie. You silly guys like to act like your message board is so vastly superior to other message boards. You like to say it's because of the low signal to noise ratio. But that is a load of crap. You all see yourselves as minor celebrities and you think your cool hanging out here. Guess I don't know my role, but I'm not here looking to make valuable industry contacts. When I don't agree I'll say so. When I do agree, I'll say so. In the mean time. Lets all work on our list of people that get preferential treatment. |
Chella Kline- How is it that you don't get that people aren't taking exception to your having opinions, but to the way that you are presenting them? It's been said over and over, and you keep twisting it around to fit your persecution complex. If you want to be defensive about everyone that's totally fine, but no one buys your martyrdom, and no one will care when you decide to leave over it. I'm not saying that to belittle you, you've made some real contributions to the conversation here. But you really are missing some perspective. It's you that went on the offensive with Anna Kang. People jumped to her defense because we like her. It's not because she's John Carmack's wife, Carmack doesn't post here. You keep complaining we won't give you a fair shake, but that's just what we keep telling you. You made people pissed off at you, it wasn't like they decided to hate you because they'd never heard of you. |
Oh yeah, and if John Carmack ever did post here, sure we'd all be totally starstruck, but so what? We'd have a whole lot of questions for him, and if he was like George Broussard we'd treat him a lot like G.B. gets treated. Not always with kid gloves, see? |
Chella: This "everyone is out to get me" attitude is really getting tired. Yes, everyone hates you because you're an opinated woman. You're smart. You're sassy. You're fresh and in their face! And they can't handle it. You speak to them in ways they can't comprehend and then get mad at them when your condescension and personal attacks are "misinterpreted". Give it a rest. Please. And no, that doesn't mean "stop posting here". It means "stop being a jerk". |
Chella: I didn't accuse you of "being duplicitous by posting under [your] real name"; I pointed it out because I felt it explained a lot about why you were so antagonistic as soon as you showed up ("Priorly rejected messageboard poster returns to the scene of the crime to exact revenge against her former tormentors"). And because I wanted a chance to join in the bashing; you know, because you're an educated, opinionated woman and all. |
#294 by MCIYA but for some reason something KAK thinks she can convince people she is not biased, just by saying "Hey, I'm not biased". Now, now, I never said "Hey, I'm not biased". I just said, lets not get personal. To some extent, everyone is biased - that's just a fact of life. I just don't agree that affiliation necessarily means that the individual's opinions are twisted lies. Asking people who they work for, are married to, are dating, are related to, or are friends with, in a public forum is not appropriate (IMHO). If they voluntarily give that info, great; if not, why force the issue? For all I know, Chella might be friends with some up and coming developer who has a bone to pick with id. Does that matter? Not to me. I base her posts on the level I base everyone else's post: Do the posts make sense, does she twist the truth or out right lie to make her point, does she troll, etc. Those are the basis with which I tend to gage or enjoy/not enjoy a post, not who she's affiliated with. Regarding the personal thing, anyone who knows me knows how much I hate to be photographed, interviewed, etc., etc. I just prefer not to get into all that. You should have seen how mad I got at one of the id guys when he wanted to take photos of me to release with the game. I'm kinda shy. ;} They also know how irritated I get when I'm referred to as the Mrs. - I have my own name and my own identity thank you very much. :) I do have my qualms about some of the id games, just as much some of you. I also have my qualms about other games by other developers. I'm a gamer, what do you expect? But as I said before, I prefer to discuss the games I like. |
#310 Heh, I just realized that this may be misinterpreted "I prefer to discuss the games I like". To clarify, I don't and haven't played all the games out there - don't have the time :( - but from the games I do get a chance to play, I will discuss them in a public forum if I enjoyed them. :) |
Anna: Damn good point about identity. I'd hate to be referred to as the spouse/sibling/parent/child of someone, like when you're a kid and you get referred to as "so and so's brother" (in my case, anyway). I do have my qualms about some of the id games, just as much some of you. Are you prepared to say what your qualms about id games are? (I'm not being picky here, I'm just intrigued) games I do get a chance to play, I will discuss them in a public forum if I enjoyed them. What would be your ideal game then? |
I have very high hopes for Doom 3, and hope that one day I can once again become the id fanboy I use to be, until Quake 2 came out. BTW, despite being disappointed with Q2 & Q3, I in no way whatsoever, believe that Romero's absence was the reason. If Romero had stayed with id, Q2 and Q3 would have been worse, and come out much later. |
My biggest hope for the new DOOM is that they hire a writer. It just seems like a critical piece of the design team to be missing. If they are serious about making the story compelling as they say they are, then they'll let someone who's experienced and talented in that area help them. |
#312 by PiMuRho Are you prepared to say what your qualms about id games are? (I'm not being picky here, I'm just intrigued) Like I said, I'd rather focus on the good. I will give this though... the one criticism that I 100% agree with is that Q3A should have had more CTF levels. I'm a huge CTF fan. :) Nevertheless, I still do enjoy going on-line (or LAN) for a good bout of Q3A. What would be your ideal game then? I'd like to believe that I'd be able to create an ideal game for someone like me (I may try it sometime) however, I'm not sure if that game would be ideal for others... I'd like to believe that it would, but you never know. In terms of the games that I have played so far, nothing has come close to the original QUAKE for me. I think a lot of it had to do with the newness of it all. At the time, there was absolutely nothing like it and the memories I still have of it... well, it's still the best game ever for me. The fun factor of an on-line Quake game was just amazing. The community, the rocket wars, the axe, the CTF games... it was just absolutely cool. Ah, the memories. |

The community, the rocket wars, the axe, the CTF games... it was just absolutely cool. Ah, the memories. Yeah, that's where my fondness of Quake1 stems from too. The newness of it all. People can bitch about the palette or whatever all they want, but that's just looking back through jaded glasses. The game/engine was fucking incredible when it came out ... just a marvel to walk around in the environments, stare at the 3D enemies, watch the rockets lighting up hallways, etc. I used to spend hours on the START MAP just walking around looking at stuff. Marvelling at it all. Then when the mapping tools starting coming out ... that was it. I lost my soul ... I was really into Doom2 mapping, but once I made my first Quake1 room and saw it run in the engine, I was a goner. I wish I could experience that again in a game ... but I think that's part of the penalty of making games for a living: you know what's going on behind the curtain. Not everything of course, but a LOT of the mystique is lost. Oh well ... |
#316 by Warren Marshall Talk about losing your soul! God, I don't know how many times I'd have a silly grin on my face, bleary eyed from a non-stop weekend of play. I'd rush home from work to make my Quake matches, meet friends online, and try to catch up on the new stuff that was constantly being released. Every few weeks there was something new. That game was the best entertainment value around. We all had great hopes and anticipated this game unlike anything else after DOOM2 but, boy, I don't think I was really ready for what we got. It so went above and beyond my wildest expectations. First, the on-line portion of deathmatch was cool, then came CTF, then the grapple and all the other countless game options. It was so fun finding crevices to hide in, going into places where you weren't supposed to get to, rocket jumping to areas that were not meant to be shown, it was like, wow, this is really 3D!!! It was simply the best gaming time of my life and I'm really glad that I was there when it happened. I really do think we were lucky to have been there, to have been there at the beginning of it all. :) |

Anna It was so fun finding crevices to hide in, going into places where you weren't supposed to get to, rocket jumping to areas that were not meant to be shown, it was like, wow, this is really 3D!! I can still remember reading about rocket jumping for the first time, during the QTEST days. I loaded up DM2 and spending a long time trying to make it work so I could get up in the rafters above the Jesus room. I was a keyboarder at that time, so it was pretty damned difficult. :P It was simply the best gaming time of my life and I'm really glad that I was there when it happened. I really do think we were lucky to have been there, to have been there at the beginning of it all. :) Yeah, I actually think that's where the recent Quake1 bashers just don't "get it". If you were there, you couldn't help but get caught up in it. The months leading up to it ... reading Aftershock, reading John's plan updates, following the latest tidbit of news ... and then QTEST ... the resulting hacks ... then the shareware ... and bliss. :) That was my favorite time in gaming. I would rush home after work to check the news sites to see what was new in the Quake world. What tools had come out, who made new maps, etc. Just a totally, totally kick ass time in gaming. The entire community seemed united and there was a lot more positive energy going around. |
I remember when all this were fields..... So it looks like the solution to the World's problems is.....Quake! Way to reminisce guys :) |
/me wipes tears from eyes It's so true. We love you Quake! |

We'll see Gothic Arcitecture... of course we will. Just beause it wasn't in those 2 minutes or so of (very much not)realtime footage, doesn't mean the entire game won't feature it. If there's one thing id know, it's that Doom was pagan/gothic/future/industrial. Damn, even one of the artists not too long back (can't remember the name offhand) said we'll get to go back to Mars/Deimos in the new game... I would suspect we'll see all the above themes in the new game, but polished to the point where the transistions between them are more seamless, or at least more logical, than in the previous two Dooms. As for the footage - - I was impressed, but only in an eyebrow-raising way. Certainly not bowled over, or anything remotely like that. I saw some cool stuff, but it was too bland and unpolished to blow my skirt up, save for the lighting spinning around the room, and the player models. Actaully, I liked the stills of the player model, but I really disliked when he started moving and talking. That looked akin to something I might be buying today (albeit if it was today, it would be an FMV!). Let's give it a while and wait for the next footage to get rolled out. By then I'm sure we'll have much better stuff to spooge over. Until then, however, that footage alone does not, in my mind, sell the GeForce 3. Peace Chango |

Okay, screw Doom 3. Those new Unreal 2 shots are so beautiful, now there's a reason to buy a new card! |
PC Quotes from the Dead, About X-Box: AHAHAHA! Are you serious? You think a 600Mhz, NV25-based box will whip the PC in 3 years time? ^_^ |
$600.00, it doesn't seem to be worth it. Now it would seem te be a good idea to get those employee discounts for those of you who get them. They are only for Macintosh... What a rip-off. Nobody likes mac anyway. This is turning into a marketing strategy for Macintosh. If they can't get sales themselves, they will recruit the help of NVidia, that seems so unfair. They are now forcing peope to buy their systems by limiting the buyers choice of video cards. I say burn them all and put it on the Windows platforms first. Besides NVidia video cards where never known to interact well with Macintosh systems, so why would they release it on an Apple G-4 based system. Well, that is it for me people. I will post again, if you catch my attention with an interesting story. |
The GF3: i dont think the GF3 is that good, yes its got faster memory architecture than a GF2 and all of these new "flexable" features but its only the start of a new breed of graphics cards. Its only half way there, its not actually that flexible. There next card however i think will be the full monty, a fully flexable fire breathing dragon. I think they are holding back slightly with GF3. If it was so good it wouldnt be called just another GeForce they would have a new name for this "revolutionary" card. Im sure GF3 is a half-caste card but im sure there next card will KICK A$$. |
Someone in here said that doom 3 looked like it could be played on a dreamcast. OK THEN! Ive not got nothing against dreamcast, I would have loved to see it kick sonys arse. But has anyone actually played Quake 3 on dreamcast? It looks terrible compared with the PC version and im running it on a voodoo banshee!! and since doom 3 will be far more advanced than quake 3 i highly doubt the dreamcast could even run the intro screen. Lets face it, to run the game at the highest pc standards, only the x-box will even stand a chance. And to all those who say x box is more powerfull than a pc. Well yes thats what dreamcast said when its specs were ANNOUNCED, a year later when it was released, it couldnt even come close. |
just a couple of comments, first you can get a ge force 3 in england now for less than £300 (on order) and that price will probably continue to fall over the next few months, so it is actually quite a bit cheaper than an x box will be. and second you hear all these x box fanatics ranting about how much more powerfull x box is than the ge force 3 because it uses an nv25, which i dont know if its true or not and maby there right. But all that means is that this FUTURE console is better than CURRENT pc standards. when this thing does eventually become availiable on shelves to buy, pc standards will be much higher than they are now, probably running on nv25s (at least) themselves. and even if there not how long will it be before they are? unless theres an x box 2 ready to follow it up 18 months after the consoles launch, the x box will soon be struggling to keep up with and then hopelessly left behind by the pc for a lot longer than it was in front. so all those people who rant about x boxs power should save it because a few short months of gloating from them will earn them years gloating back when the pc takes over (if it hasnt already by the time the thing gets launched). and just to confirm my point, the playstation was also more powerful than the pc when it came out and no body in there right mind would even attempt a comparison now, even its successor is dated by ge force 3 standards. |
I have seen the video, an wondered what might the game run like on a mid spec machine (duron 800, GeForce 2 MX 32MB, 256MB SDRAM) any ideas people? |
10,000's of polys per model? I doubt it. Look at Hughes Hoppe's research page. Silhouette Clipping + Bump mapping. Fake the detail and cut out the faceted edges. There is no just cause that a fool will not follow. HALLO MISTAH!

Look an old Doom3 topic. |
We should have used this one instead of a new one on the front page. |
Hey I got a great idea. The submission bin is dead. Since everything has already been discussed, just bring back the old threads. If it's not a sequel it's a remake. All games are dead. In the off chance there is something new to discuss, gabe will make a topic. |
Hat trick! |
LOSE |
I'm ok with it, as long as we can move the old threads to the front page. Sgt Hulka-I punched the toilets for about 5 mins and never got them to flush.
OpenCrap should be your front page. |

So where's the Pong thread? I expect all games discussion to occur there from now on. Dood.
