Selling out to the enemy?
December 10th 2000, 18:44 CET by Andy

Jonathan Clark of long-dead developers Crack.com is selling the company's domain name. And he doesn't seem to care what it's used for...

The pitch for the sale on eBay reads:

For sale: crack.com domain name and registered US trademark. "crack" has consistently been in the top 100 most searched for keywords by all the major search engines. Currently crack.com receives more than 500,000 hits/month from tech savvy surfers interested in copyright protection and subversion, drugs, and video games.

There are obvious ethical questions to be asked with regard to the drugs part of that. (Are we to assume that Clark is happy to sell the domain to, for instance, a drug advocacy group?) But let's put those to one side...

When he refers to "copyright protection and subversion", he's clearly talking about people looking for software cracks. In other words, he's selling Crack.com on its suitability for hosting a crack site.

Just a tad ugly, isn't it? Selling a game company's domain name so that, possibly, it can be used to help people steal games and other software?

There's something else that's strange about the auction, and with the US court culture it's easy to imagine the legal problems that may arise.

The full description of the 'item' being sold is:

crack.com domain + trademark + 500k hits/month

Okay, so when the sale goes through, Clark transfers the domain name and signs over the trademark. That's all black and white stuff, so no problem there.

But he's also selling 500,000 hits per month. Surely that's a binding agreement? What happens if, a year from now, the site's only getting 100,000 hits per month? It may seem ridiculous, but there are no doubt a few lawyers out there who would gladly go after Clark for... what, breach of contract?

A retired Indian photographer who has grown his fingernails for almost half a century is finally calling it quits and will auction them off to the highest bidder.

First of all, those 500k hits are ofcourse also dependent upon connectivity, such as possible network problems. This will ofcourse be mentioned in the final agreement, so there's no way you'll be able to sue them for those hits, since they'll always be able to say: "Oh, maybe the Net was down somewhere... Gee, read your agreement!"

Next, what's bad about selling it to a drug advocacy group or software crackers? Should we hold knife-salesmen responsible for people getting stabbed as well? I mean, sure, you could find it offensive that someone selling a knifeshop advertises with the fact that lots of his customers have unfriendly motives but so what? If it's true, then there's nothing wrong with stating that fact.

This could even inspire anti-drug groups or anti-piracy groups to buy the domain preventively, but they'll only do so if someone tells them it would make sense for them to do so. And that's what they're doing.

Whats more interesting is the fact that at £31,000 the reserve still hasn't been met. Just how much is this Clark chap looking to get for the domain?

it's $31k in US dollars, not pounds. as for how much they're looking to get; as with all auctions, i expect they're looking to get as much as possible. that's the whole point.

I wouldn't worry about the reserve. Take a look at this from the details page at crack.com:

The name will be sold before the reserve is met, so donít wait until the last minute to bid.

The way it look they set the reserve high with the intention of selling it when the auction ends to try to get people to continualy bid on it rather then use the bid at the last minute stratagy.

I doubt Clark gives a flying fuck at a rolling donut what the domain does after he's no longer associated with it. You don't sell a house and worry about what your old neighbours think of the new ones.

As for the subject ... I don't think he's doing anything wrong. It could be bought by someone going to do good as well. It could be an ANTI-PIRACY/DRUG group or whatever, knowing that this domain will get tons of hits from people so they can try to spread their message.

I'd rather talk about the Death of the Crap. In all the recent topics, none have topped 100 posts (well maybe 1-2). And certainly none like the "old" days.

So, where is everyone? Was it the downtime? Was it Andy dissapearing? Is it the recent lame topics? Have people just moved on?

Where is everyone?

Downtime? When was that?

My best bet, is that the heavy users were sitting on the side lines waiting for Crapspy to get updated.

We now have both a crapspy, and an Andy, so I think we should just sit back and let it happen again. Discussing the death is of PC is in my opinion premature at this point.

Personally, I think the biggest issue has been crapspy, it's MUCH more difficult to paticipate here without it, and even more so when the message counts in a thread get high.

On the other hand, it would not hurt at all if you did something controversial to spark a topic. :)

Everyone's gone from the OMM forums, too. /.'s getting less comments per post this weekend.

- Everyone playing their new PS2s?
- The fucking winter getting to some people?
- Finals week/College classes are over until January?
- American McGee's Infinite Jest has them all in its clutches?

Whoever buys the crack.com domain should just go hog wild and make it into Ebay for drugs. What's the reserve on that black tar, senor?

I am a complete bastard when it comes to posting offtopic, but I can't help myself sometimes.

(Info ganked from http://members.accessus.net/~090/awh/how2adj.html#5.2)
4.6a VIDEO SOURCE RESOLUTION
Your television's resolution is limited by the video source. Your TV monitor may be able to display 700 lines or more of horizontal resolution, however when viewing VHS tapes the very best you will get is 240 lines (see the chart below).
The following resolutions (HORIZONTAL x VERTICAL) are all for NTSC (US) and are the very best that can be expected out of that particular format.

HDTV: 1280x720 (Hi-Res 16:9)
HDTV: 704x480 (Standard-Res 16:9)
DVD: 540x480 (4:3) (progressive scan)
ED-Beta: 525x482
TVRO: 525x482 (Live Backhaul)
LaserDisc: 425x482 (4:3)
DVD: 405x480 (16:9) (progressive scan)
S-VHS: 400x482
Broadcast: 330x482
CABLE: 330x482
SUPERBETA: 285x482
BETA: 250x482
VHS: 240x482
DBS: 364x240

With that info in hand, I'm confused as hell. I have a TV that claims it can do 850 Lines of resolution. I've always assumed that those were horizontal. If that's the case, I don't understand how the hell I'm supposed to use it to it's fullest potential. It would appear that in order to come anywhere near that level, I'd have to be watching HDTV. The problem with that, is I was under the assumption that in order to watch HDTV, one would be required to purchase a new TV. The ones available now that claim to be HDTV cost as much as a house.

Anyone here a videophile that can explain the discrepancy?

Thanks.

PS (I had no idea VHS sucked that badly, wow!)

It's called a default draft:

1. Open up a post window for the site you want.

2. Type what you want to be shown every time you open the post window.

3. Put the text cursor where you want it to be when you open a new post.

4. Click the default draft button on the toolbar.

Now you'll have the post text exactly how you set it whenever you want to make a new post or use Quote 'n' Go.

I'd say it has more to do with the fact that a new topic appears every other day, and often more than one ... people don't have TIME to post. :)

Big part of it. I left for Thanksgiving break and didn't take my computer home. When I got back, it was REAL hard to work up the energy to read through over a week's backlog, especially with only a week left until finals. When v4 came up and CrapSpy broke, I just gave up until the end of the semester. CrapSpy has saved me!

I think it has to do with people getting used to the subcrap idea, and/or waiting for Crapspy. Without Cspy, the site was slow going for me, and it was hard to keep track of which items I had read. All Hail Craig Lewin!

I normally would never respond to a troll, but I am curious as to why pianist or people like him post the stuff they do. Is it really as simple as a grab for attention?

And threatening people or telling them to die is never an especially wise move, even in jest, when your IP is plainly visible (telusplanet.net is the address for Telus users out of Alberta, if I remember corretly). In any case, I'm with George. He has contributed nothing and his attempts at humor are, um, less than successful. On the other hand, he never says much, so he's easy to ignore. Just watch when he responds to this post and gets nothing but silence from me. :)
