CrapSpy v2 has been RELEASED!!
December 10th 2000, 01:08 CET by Craig

Yes, finally, the new CrapSpy is here. I decided to write a new topic about it so I could explain a few of the new features to people. So while you're downloading the new version, read this and soak up some information.

Download the update <a href="http://www.planetcrap.com/crapspy/">here</a>. The site has also been updated with a full distribution file and new gallery images so you can see what the new version looks like.

<b>First off, when you install the new CrapSpy you'll be confronted with the script download window. As no scripts are distributed with CrapSpy anymore, you'll need to simply double-click on a script in the list to install it.</b> Once you are done with that, close the window and CrapSpy will load normally.

When going through the options dialog, remember that most options are per site. To change sites just click the site name in the top left of the window.

Perhaps the best new feature is Quote 'n' Go: instead of reading a post, replying to it, then reading another post and making another reply... all you need to do is select the text you want to quote, right click and click the Quote 'n' Go menu item, the quote will then be added to a list. When you're done reading through all the posts and selecting parts you want to reply to, just click on the Generate Message button. This will make one message that contains all the quotes you have selected and give you a space to reply to each point.

Seeing as every beta tester asked this: yes, you can put the list back on the left of the post. Go into the Posts menu and click "List on Left".

All times are now shown in <b>your</b> time zone.

Whether a post is ignored or on notify is now represented by a check mark or an X in the status column of the post list, it no longer changes the color of any text in the list. If your name is mentioned in a post, it's entry will be red. If you click F3 when viewing that post it will search for your name.

To switch sites in the topics list window, you can either double click on it's entry in the status list at the bottom or click the site name in the status bar for a menu.

Whilst you're reading a post, the new toolbar button next to the previous post button will tell you if CrapSpy has found any replies to that post. You can either click the button to generate a summary of the posts found, or click the small arrow to show a menu of the posts. If you load a post from that menu, it will keep the replies for the original post, so that you can look at all replies for that post easily. If, however, you want to look for relpies to the new post you're reading then click on "Update for Current".

The links you add in a post through the Add Link window are remembered, if you want to add the same link again just click the dropdown menu arrow on the Add Link toolbar button.

<b>Remember... You can right click on alot of things: the quote 'n' go list, the topics list, the post list, the post window, a chat nickname, an update.</b>

I was actually thinking of uninstalling my old CrapSpy, thinking that I would be better off installing from fresh. Thankfully I didn't.
Let's hear it for laziness! Woooot!
Thank you very much, Craig, for your efforts.

It's like a newsreader, but for PlanetCrap (and now SubCraps) instead of usenet.

Makes quoting messages, squelching people, etc, waaaaay easy.<i><b></b></i><i></i><i></i>

Not in this version, I wanted to get a version out so people could use it. The next version will support subcraps properly, but for now I will make up another script if a subcrap is popular enough to warrant one. I will also release scripts for other sites in the next few days.

Anyone else getting a Visual Basic error alang the lines of "Run time error 13 Type Mismatch"
when they try to start up crapspy? I've tried the update and the new full version but no luck.

I've also emailed Craig so hopefully I'll be able to get it working soon.

WORLD NEWS - The booming sound of mass plonkings were heard around the world today as CrapSpy v2 become available for download.  This does not come without it's price however.  In one tragic case, the audience for the_reformed_pianist dropped from 100% to a mere 5%.  Of those 5%, 80% were quoted as saying they would like to install CrapSpy and plonk him but they use Linux and, as is so often the case, are unable to run the software.

When asked for comment, the_reformed_pianist replied, "FUCK YOU FAG!!1!1!!".  He was unavailable for further comment as he had retired to the bathroom with the new Sears catalog.

Not everything has to be open-sourced, but us Linux and Mac (and Solaris and Irix, etc...) users think CrapSpy is nifty, and want to use it, too.

...is it so bad that craig might want to hold onto his code or try to get revenue from his hard work?

Certainly not. However, since he isn't presently getting any revenue from CrapSpy, and since I (and I'm sure quite a few other people) would like to see CrapSpy ported to non-Windows OSes, open-sourcing the code (or, alternately, opening it to a few people interested in porting it) would be the simplest way of accomplishing this that entails the least amount of work on Craig's part.

Begging Craig to code a Linux port is, to me, rather distasteful given the amount of work Craig already spends maintaining CrapSpy, and is probably futile in any case. Asking for the source code in order to port CrapSpy to Linux is not nearly as demanding.

a gecko port? why?

As I understand it, CrapSpy's rendering features are currently IE-dependent. Gecko (Mozilla's renderer) is a far superior render (in my experience), and has the advantage of also being cross-platform; porting CrapSpy to Gecko would allow relatively easy ports to lots of platforms.

On the topic of craig or someone else porting crapspy, or making it opensource:

How about this.  Linux is the land of roll your own software.  If you want a linux program, do what all Linux people do, and make one.  Crapspy, if I understand is coded in VB.  Converting this to Linux would be a much more massive job than simply making a new one.

The html page with all the messages is there, one of you clever linux guys should do what Craig did, and whip up a parser, and add in the features you want.

No one is stopping you.

Craig why not just pull the proxy setting from the computers internet settings rather then crapspy getting it's own settings? Of course leave an option to bypass the proxy in crapspy, or enter your own if need be. <i><b></b></i><i></i><i></i>

if CrapSpy uses the WinInet API, you can use the proxy settings as defined by Internet Explorer.  Use the INTERNET_OPEN_TYPE_PRECONFIG flag with InternetOpen().

Doh, I completely forgot about the proxy settings... Oh well, to install it manually do this:

1. Create a folder in your CrapSpy folder called "sites" then one in there called "planetcrap".

2. Download this <a href="http://www.planetcrap.com/crapspy/planetcrap4.spt">file</a> and save it as "script.spt" in "CrapSpy\sites\planetcrap"
