Fly International
May 6th 2000, 01:26 CEST by andy

Following the problematic release earlier this week of Terminal Reality's Fly2k on the Mac, with every copy being unusable due to a duplication error, people who had bought the game were advised to contact publisher Gathering of Developers to arrange replacement copies.

With some people outside the States having mail-ordered the game and now being faced with high postage charges to return it, we contacted the project leader Richard Harvey to check what they can do. This is his advice:

I would suggest international users contact the Gathering support line at (214) 303-1202; this will probably save them the very high shipping charges to return their packages back to the U.S.

We have already notified all retailers, and all boxed copies in their possesion should be "frozen" and not shipped to any customers until replacements have been provided.

I'm hoping we'll have new boxes off the production line in about one week, and then availability should expand pretty quickly. I have not yet heard from our Take2 Europe representative on when Fly! 2K will be released overseas.

So it looks like non-US customers are staring down the barrel of an international phone call, which even if it only lasts a few minutes will probably set them back half the price of the game. But still - it's a bad situation, and this is an okay way of handling it, although perhaps a web form or e-mail contact would be better?

In true 'Crap style, we have to ask - does anyone out there know of retailers still selling the game? Have any mail order companies shipped copies in the last couple of days? Either let me know by e-mail or post a comment.

hehe

actually, I've viewed the old PC (for planetcrap, not Personal Computer, which sounds kinda odd in a mac discussion) on an iMac

Hmm.. Andy/Morn, get Webtrends.. I think that's what it's called. There're a few site tracking programs that can tell what OS and browser hit your site... it'd be interesting reading.

Other than that, and onto the topic at hand. I beat FlameThrower to first post. You may bow now : )

I'm surprised that it wasn't called out to reach G.O.D. online for replacement, but, I've never been to G.O.D. for tech support so, who knows what they do... of course, at Infogrames, we have people call our tech support for any replacements they want to do as well, easier to put it in our old-ass database system I suppose.

Does anyone remember when or if Origin ever shipped out the replacement CDs for Ultima 9? A very similar situation indeed.

Seems to me that if you live overseas and you're importing the game then you have to take the good with the bad. You either pay for the phone call or the shipping. I've imported games to the US before and that's just the risk you take. There's no crying when you're in the grey market.

Yeah I got my replacement U9 cd a few weeks ago. It even came with a free UO cd and an account key. Neither of which I have used, I'm waiting until they actually finish implementing all the features they advertised before firing up my free month, since I doubt I'll keep paying them.

Did you hear about the AOL Sosaria shard? What a hoot!

As for cheaking the Mac section, I for one do this all the time (a pain is the ass since none of the local stores have dedicated sections for any thing), any way I use a mac for graphics design (since adobe can't seam to pull there heads out of there asses and develop correctly for the PC and though game designers can't seem to develop for a Mac eather). Anyway I would assume a few places are still selling the CD (freeze and recall orders do get ignored by some places, hell we've had a few smaller stores selling deady hotdogs a week after a recall order). I would also say that some chains (most Walmart/Kmart like stores) see this as a trivial problem and won't take the time to remove it (or even replace it after the new CDs are in) Of course how many PC readers shop at these stores anyway? I sure as hell don't.

One of the stores here in town sells Mac software, and to put it easily, it's in the part of the store where the sun fades the boxes. It's great, like a joke done on purpose.

It's not a grey market, it's legit mail order companies that are selling the game to overseas customers. It's no more a grey market than if you walked down to a software store and bought a copy of the game over the counter.

Actually, Webtrends is CRAP compared to Statistics Server 5.02 Copyright 1996,1997,1998,1999 MediaHouse Software Inc.

I use that software on all my sites, and only installed it after using WebTrends for a year. Webtrends doesn't hold a candle to it, IMHO.

Now that I can check the crap from home (at least for a short time), I won't have so much to catch up on when Monday rolls around.

While making an international call sucks, I'm sure they could handle this for FREE via e-mail.

Business Idea: Customer Advocacy International -- UK consumers e-mail me your complaint and all the details and I'll make the phone call from here in the States. For a nominal fee, of course. :)

But doesn't that then fall under the term "importing"? If the game hasn't yet been released in your country, by buying from a mail-order house in the US, you're accepting that risk of defect or not liking it. It's the same thing with buying Japanese imports for consoles, right?

In fact, doesn't the license agreement specifically state that the game is for use in a specific territory? So if you buy it from some other territory, then you're not entitled to the support. (Technically of course...) With Japanese imports in the US, you're on your own pretty much. If I buy the import of Power Stone 2 now for my Dreamcast, I'm accepting that it could have problems, etc. Heck, the Playstation 2 is a case in point. I doubt Sony will want to help out someone who wants to send back their memory card that's defective if they live in the US.

hmm...I remember buying a game that had been recalled and replaced due to a virus somehow making it onto the CD, and I almost completely expected Walmart to have actually complied with that, but I scanned the CD with Norton AV anyway, and there was the virus ;)

In other words, if your local Walmart sells Mac software, I'd be willing to bet (assuming they carry G.o.D. titles) that they'd have it.
