Napster for wankers
November 30th 2000, 03:47 CET by Andy

Nordic Research, a Swedish "technology company focusing on cutting edge Internet research", has launched its new Leechnet service. What is it? According to Nordic's own site: "Leechnet is about sharing porn! Nothing else."

You use the service in much the same way as Napster -- download the client software, tell it what sort of files you're looking for, and if another user has got some then you can download them for free.

Obviously it wouldn't be much good if you could only search by filename, so the search criteria includes the type of picture you want, what sort of 'action' you're interested in, how many participants there should be, and many other options.

Searching for pictures of three bisexuals wearing PVC in a car, two gays masturbating in the shower or a group of fat folk engaging in some water sports didn't turn up any results, but your tastes may me less demanding than mine. ;-)

Naturally, just like Napster you aren't allowed to use Leechnet for anything illegal. Oh no. The service "is designed to enable users to share adult images that they own the license for", according to Nordic's terms and conditions. You're also warned: "You should be aware that some images may have been created or distributed without copyright owner authorization." That's a verbatim copy of the warning Napster gives, albeit referring to images instead of MP3s.

It will be interesting to see how the online "civil rights" mob react if the porn industry tries to get Leechnet shut down. People have been happy to stand up and defend Napster, but will they defend a porn swapping service with the same passion?

Funny, I was just smiling about some of the search phrases people are finding PlanetCrap with. :)

Sounds to me like the replacement for the Scour Exchange. I think 79 percent of all transfers on that were porn. The people want porn. I'd bet the surest way to get a high hit count on a sub-crap is to put "Porn, xxx, hardcore, sex" etc. etc. in you meta tags.

(Heavy Jack Nicholson accent here:) "Are you out of your f*cking mind?"

I just went through your stupid account design process only to post this comment: This pathetic, "ooooh, I'm expanding and diversifying" move has all the intellectual prowess that Coke had when they switched to Classic Coke. It was a miserable failure, and whether or not the site is as popular or more popular than it was with the last design, the main reason I visited was because of Planet Crap's ease of accessibility. It's focus was clear, the good posts were mixed in with the spams, and the diversity was attractive and interesting.

Why scatter the spirit of Planet crap with such a stupid, unecessary "modification"? Who's going to frickin' look up the comments of the designer/regulars here on several different topics, or even give a crap about some do-nothing personal crap story that doesn't maintain the consistent alignment of perspectives one could find here? Good gravy, change the site back - and pull that inspirational hair out of your nose. It's uncomely.

Now.

Hold on andy... let me log on and you can leech away.

www.pronster.com's going to have the same problems if any problems what so ever.

If you want porn, get iMesh, it is hard to connect to and stay connected but it is the most reliable file exchange program because it downloads a file from anyone who has it listed as available, not just if one person has it online at that time.  I wish other programs like Napster would use that method since it makes it a trillion times easier to get obscure files.

I had Imesh for a whole day, it never connected, yet the site said it's network was fine. Imesh is the worst file sharing program ever. I suppose if I could have actually tried it, I may like it but I couldn't and everyone else I've talked to says it's constantly disconnecting and what not. That's just not gonna cut it for me.

Actually, switching from New Coke back to the original Coke Classic was very successful for Coke.  While New Coke was a failure (which is what I assume you were talking about), it ended up being beneficial for Coke in the end because what they wanted to achieve (to stop losing market share) did actually happen.

Snopes has some really good pages on cokelore.

If there's a better reason for the internet than pr0n, I don't know what it is.  So it's about time those lazy pr0n-meisters got off their boytoys and started making it easier for me to get it.

Can't really use it from work, but from what i can tell at the leechnet page it's only pictures.  Scour rocked for the videos that were available.  static porn is so '93, full motion video is so much nicer

Question to those who're reading this: would you rather like the "old" colour scheme back? Charlie W. has created a PC3-lookalike theme at http://teentwat.planetcrap.com (*ahem* <g>). I've taken his theme, done some minor modifications and put my version of it on http://darktheme.planetcrap.com. Check it out and tell me if you'd rather see this theme return (the default theme for new subcraps would still be this "light" one you're seeing now).

There are two things pushing the cutting edge of cyberspace: Microsoft - for inflating hardware demands - and porn - for making the internet big. Coincidence? (Cue X-Files theme.)

Anyway, I like porn as much as the next pervert, so bring it on!

I can't see people standing up to defend their right to access free porn. But that doesn't really matter, since outcome of the more public MP3 debacle will probably decide what will happen in similar lawsuits in the future.

IMHO the old color scheme was better, Morn.

Peace,

Ahh gee, this was waiting to happen...P0rn - napster...! I can't say I don't like it ("Pervert!" I hear someone shout) cuz maybe this is a way of getting better quality images and not the same stuff all the time. Downside: it's easier to distribute 'illegal p0rn' and by that I mean kiddie porn or violation porn and stuff... especially in the Asian and bondage categories they are much too common and I don't like it at all (the people who make and view THOSE images are the real pervs!!)

On another note: porn is still a taboo, proof be Andy's post. As if he turns down the idea of porn sharing and porn in general... while he DID find out about it and he tried it out too.
OK I know porn is mostly for wankers but I myself have never had my screen covered in white stuff (stop me if I'm getting too sick :-) )and... forget it, I don't remember what I wanted to say.

BTW I'd just like to say perversion isn't a typical Dutch thing (just in case, cuz the TheHun site 47BTEG pointed to was made by a Dutch guy and Americans seem to think we're all a bunch of immoral pervs out here)

And eh, Morn: I liked the previous color scheme (the grey shades) much better. It sucks that PlanetCrap isn't centralized anymore, so you never know where to find an interesting story :-(

Oh, you need to understand what the entire subcrap thing is all about. The main site, www.planetcrap.com, is still really exactly the same thing it was before (except people can now submit stories more easily). It wasn't my intention to actively "spread interesting stories around all the subcraps", but rather just to allow people to run their own PlanetCrap-style discussion sites. Think ezBoard with a PlanetCrap touch. :)

How many stupid file exchange services do we need now? What's next LevNet - search for add on game levels stored on other computers, or maybe CreditNet - search for Quicken and Ms Money files.

Why are all of the populer exchange programs created for one type of file? I mean gess would it really be that hard to add image support to Napster or music file support to leachnet (possible the worst name anyone could think of).

I've taken his theme, done some minor modifications and put my version of it on http://darktheme.planetcrap.com. Check it out and tell me if you'd rather see this theme return

Why not just let us select a theme, pull a few of the good setups from the subcraps and make them themes for the main page. Just the themes nothing nearly as complex as the full custom CSS used by the subcraps.

Yeah, F it! Really hard! I guess :-)

Seriously though, how is it different from before? The only difference is that people are required to register (very much unlike an IRC channel, by the way). Oh yeah, and registered users can create their own sites, which are completely independent from the main site. What's the big deal? I respect that not everybody is happy with the changes, but I can't really see why.

Morn, I prefer the darker color scheme as well. Large chunks of white onscreen are just too hard on the eyes.

Oh, and 120 subrcaps...ha ha...man, who has time to read any of those? You give people a little power and sheesh! I don't mind them at all. It's a good idea. I'm just waiting for someone to come up with a good filtering system for them. :)
