More piracy woes for GameSpy
December 2nd 2000, 05:55 CET by Andy

Another site hosted by GameSpy is being used for piracy.

Clay Templeton, alias "BiG_GunS", the 16 year-old leader of mod group tmProductions, uses his PlanetUnreal-hosted site to advertise pirate copies of games, as well as movies in the DivX format.

He currently lists over 20 gigabytes of games and over 11 gigabytes of movies. A list of applications is promised for the next update.

The list, which is not password-protected and has been linked to from at least one popular gaming message board, has been available for over a month.

Templeton says on the site: "Everything listed here is located locally; either on a cd or on my hard drive. If you want access to any of this, simply e-mail me ... and we can set up a scheduled transfer."

There are also instructions for how to obtain files on CD, and Templeton gives out what appears to be his home address in Arkansas, USA.

Some of the games listed are Half-Life and Opposing Force, the whole of the Quake series including some mission packs, Sin, Soldier of Fortune, Unreal and Unreal Tournament, Elite Force and Deus Ex.

The movies listed appear to be mostly older titles that are already available on video. The more recent ones include American Beauty, Fight Club and Road Trip.

It does not appear that Templeton stores any pirated material on GameSpy's servers.

GameSpy's press contact was not immediately available for comment. One ex-senior employee said managers almost certainly aren't aware of the hosted site being used for piracy.

Update: Three hours later, the games/movies list, which was at this address, is no longer available. (It hasn't been removed, but it has been blocked.) We haven't heard back from GameSpy yet, and the e-mail we sent earlier didn't include the address, so it's not clear who blocked access to the list, or why.

Hmm... trading movies and music via email or tape is legal (home recording act) in the US. Trading computer games is not. Neither iis posting them on the internet, that is broadcasting.

Just so you guys are clear on this, it might save a longassed post tomorrow or monday (if the topic stays on the main page that long, they've been going up at a fantastic rate)

It's typical of this site to hone and target 'news' such as this to make it appear that the GameSpy network is somehow the piracy capital of the gaming world.  This couldn't be further from the truth.  We have thousands of subdirectories on PlanetUnreal alone, and no, they are not all monitored via the 'piracy police'.

All GameSpy hosted sites agree to not use their sites for warezing, pornography, etc. prior to being hosted, and if they fail to abide by their hosting agreement, they may be removed upon discovery.  This is how we would like to prevent the distribution of inappropriate and/or illegal materials, and the policy has been quite effective, considering the volume of information contained on PlanetUnreal.  Without fail, when inappropriate materials have been reported to me, I have removed them.

Unfortunately, PlanetCrap's entire reason for being is to immediately make 'tabloidish waves' in situations like this, by making this discovery public, rather than responsibly inform me, the Site Director, privately, while doing its dead-level best to give a black eye to a site such as PlanetUnreal, which serves the Unreal Tournament community in a very positive way.  I don't believe there's anything wrong with investigative journalism, in fact I support it, but PlanetCrap generally posts first and gets the 'investigation' part later (if at all), and that's just irresponsible.

As for the "press contact" not being available for comment, you can contact me directly on PlanetUnreal issues, Andy.  Anyone who pays any attention at all to PlanetUnreal knows I run the site, and I'll be happy to respond to your queries.

Upon discovering the reported activities here for the first time, as well as some other materials on the site that you don't mention which violate our hosting policy, TM Productions is being removed from PlanetUnreal.  'Nuff said.

*Yawn*

Andy, if you're not bothering GameSpy, 3D Realms, Jason Hall, Lowtax, the local Burger King, the Quake community . . .  well, if you're not just plain bothering ANY FAINTLY SUCCESSFUL ORGANISATION OR PERSON, then you must be *asleep*!

/me looks foward to the next thread, probably about how George Broussard keeps Ethiopian kids in his basement to make him cheap trainers, or how The Stile Project swears too much.

I don't see that whole slam Gamespy thing every one's talking about. Andy before this get out of hand what did you ask in the e-mail sent to gamespy?

Gamespy's handeled this exactly as they should have, blocking the offending hosted site (they will not delete it out right since they need the infomation in case some one starts a law suit about it).  Any host would have done the exact same thing.

What exactly was "tabloidish" about this story?  Everything in there is factual; several of us verified it before Andy posted the story.  At no point does he say "Gamespy knows about and condones piracy on it's servers."  He says just the opposite:

It does not appear that Templeton stores any pirated material on GameSpy's servers.

GameSpy's press contact was not immediately available for comment. One ex-senior employee said managers almost certainly aren't aware of the hosted site being used for piracy.

The story title is a bit inflammatory, but other than that, I see nothing at all to complain about.  You actually sound pretty defensive about it all, spouting this "tabloidish waves" and "black eye to PU" stuff when there was no intimation whatsoever that PU had any responsibility in the matter.  Andy not contacting you directly is completely understandable - if a company lists a press contact somewhere, then that's where they want "press" inquiries to go.  You should be complaining that the press contact wasn't immediately available, not that you weren't consulted.  I've been going to PU ever since it's brazen arrival, and I have no idea who's the "Site Director".  I could give a shit.  It's a Gamespy site so I would contact Gamespy about it.

Anywho who's bitching about Andy being one-sided and biased against these groups needs to take a step back and think about this site for a moment. This is PlanetCrap, not some local newspaper. Nowhere does it state that these articles, editorials, opinions if you will must be objective... Give it a rest, we've all heard people rip on Andy for pointing out things one too many times.

Oh, and Morn, this new version of 'Crap absolutely 0wns.

"Unfortunately, PlanetCrap's entire reason for being is to immediately make 'tabloidish waves' in situations like this."

I think you'll find that PlanetCrap exists so that people who are interested in online/gaming/tech/internet type stuff can discuss topical goings on. GSN are a big force in the online gaming scene, and as such should expect to be hammered with negative press, that's life, get over it.

QAPete, Gamespy is hosting a site with roms. How are rims different from warez? If Gamespy's willing to let people steal games in the open, we can only guess what they hide.

Not to mention, talking to you probably wouldn't have done anything. After all, you did nothing about your careless act of linking to a porn site, despite the fact kids go to your website.

Gamespy drones can never admit any wrong doing. Their sites are slow crappy and now we got that extra page to go through at File planet just to get to their list of slow ass servers. Thank God there's only a few file that I gotta go to FP for.

Yeah I can download if I have to. But I can always count on it usually taking 4 times as long as any other site. The only reason Gamespy's even around anymore is because newbies out number real gamers on the net these days.

#979, No. Not yet. I'm still in shock really right now. I'm not really sure what all to do. I don't want to go into details about any of this. I'm scared shitless, and am paranoid as hell right now. This has changed me quite a bit, already. I just don't feel like discussing anything pertaining to stuff that's linked me to this entire incident.
-

he's in shock about what? he posted a list of things he had stolen, and was offering them to other people on gamespy's ftp space, and he's shock that someone is actually going to bring about some wrath over it?

might want to throw all your shitty DIVX's away now, before David Lynch and Steven Speilberg take you to court!

But seriously, theres something very wrong with this BiG_GunS guy - anyone who posts his sexual fantasies about 14 year olds on a public messageboard or who boasts about the 30 meg of kiddy porn on his Planet Unreal site should have set a few alarm bells ringing with the PU admins.

I think it's because IE gives out a you are not autherized to view this page rather then the normal gamespy 404 not found page. 404 would say it's been deleted and no longer exist, not autherized would mean it's been blocked from the public (they've got to keep the stuff around in case some one wants it for evedince or say Templeton desides to sue for removing the site)

Oh great, that snivelling twerp Andy is back? I thought he was gone for good? Damnit Morn, Craig, I thought you guys flushed this hapless moron and cast him to the depths of obscurity from whence he came?!?

Anyway, speaking of hapless morons, here is another example of 'media' abuse in today's latest Media Abuse. Go figure.

I don't want to create a subcrap for this topic, but I DO want CrapSpy to work again!!! I still can't get it work, after this later spat of changes. What'd I miss? Help!!

lets see...
some twit ...posted warez list..on a hosted site ..without doing any sort of url faker...and gets caught
gamespy..the host...hides the page...and we are waiting to hear about procecution

um ..we all know its wrong to steal...we also know that showing your bare ass in public will either get you slapped ..and or get you in jail for a bit

whats the problem...its a huge internet
warez are prolific...i dont even want to get into what you can find on any hosting companys server..the most prolific traders are the server room techs..who just leech off the boxes they are taking care of!
no risk ..hard to catch..
the only way to stop them ..is to pay em more AND outlaw brining of laptops to work...
prominant company ..who holds servers for insurance and so forth...pay big bucks..with a criminal check to discourage outside leaks...
works sometimes...look...NOONE can afford to pay someone..<usually multiple someones> enough to not only monitar and pull warez sites..but also not leech from them before pulling.>
say your getting 10bucks an hr..you can buy a game mabey every 4mths..or more ...and you are monitaring a system and the sites there in for illegal copys of the very games you WISH you could by...
how many would honestly resist that temtation,...and how many would let it slide til somone outside brings it to attention in some way?

i do realize that gamespy SHOULD be monitaring..i also realize that its as likely a perfect alpha compile!

I was getting 403 forbidden earlyer (and still at at the main tmproduction page), it might have been move and deleted since andy made the update.
#32 by "szcx"
2000-12-04 08:05:28
nedocze@hotmail.com
i got a 403 on the main tmproduction page as well, but that doesn't prove that the file exists, all it does is show the folder exists.  if the site contents were removed there would be no default document, and since directory browsing isn't allowed on the gamespy servers, a 403 error is shown.

if the file existed and was simply unavailable because of security settings (like no anonymous site access), it would also show up as a 403 (unavailable), not as a 404 (non-existant).

so andy, how about updating the topic to reflect the fact that you have no proof whatsoever as to whether or not the file exists?
#33 by "Chromag"

The file existed.  Andy sent the link to our admin list the night before he posted the story and three of us verified it.  The PU site manager acknowledged it's existence.  Put that "if it existed" stuff to rest. :)

i didn't mean to imply that i doubted the file ever existed, i'm questioning andy's update.  he says that the file is still there, just hidden.  is there some proof of that, or is it a suspicion?  if he only suspects that it's still there, he should say so and not try to pass it off as fact.

Let me explane this again, I visited shortly after the updated and followed the link, which at the time gave a 403. Now it give a 404 not found message. Thus when I went the file was hidden by a security setting, and latter removed (thus giving me the 403 error while it was hidden, and the 404 messge once it had been removed).

If andy had tried that file and got a 403 as well (which would be the case since it'd be damn hard for him not to get one when I did shortly after the update), the file was hidden when he made the update. You do know GSI could have very easaly delete the file or moved it since andy made that update right?
