Max in pain?
November 22nd 2000, 15:10 CET by andy

Is another 3DRealms game about to bite the bullet?

According to a recent rumour on the FatBabies site, Max Payne may be in trouble. Citing "two reputable sources", the site reported: "Apparently execs at Gathering of Developers and Take Two Interactive are extremely frustrated with the delays on the PC and PS2 versions of Max Payne and are considering canceling the whole kaboodle. The game has been in development for 4 years already... it’s time to ship or dump."

Not surprisingly, the story is being denied.

Asked if there was any truth in the FatBabies report, Mike Wilson of publisher GoD said simply: "No truth. They are idiots."

George Broussard of 3DRealms, which is 'overseeing' the game's development by Remedy Entertainment, said he has heard nothing of any possible cancellation, and as far as 3DR is concerned the project continues as planned.

Is GoD (the publisher) funding the development? I hear those 3DRealms guys have more money than God (the deity) so they could probably afford to fund it themselves.

The question is, when, eventually, IF it comes out, will it be a sad, dated, joke -- or will it be as good as John Romero's Daikatana ??!!

It's really not surprising that they would consider dropping a game that's been in development for more than four years. In order to be profitable, it's going to have to sell a lot of units. Any responsible company would look at whether the game is worth finishing. There's no point in spending another million dollars to finish a game if it's only going to return half a million in sales.

Max Payne is going to be released in a very competative environment. Even if it's a top notch game, I doubt it's going to generate the quantity of sales that G.O.D. and Take Two expect.

I hear developers dislike FatBabies. That's becuase they TRY to tell it like it is. I hear a lot of bitche fanboys rant against FatBabies. That's because THEY are fat babies, jealous ones at that.

If it is true it would seem more like an attempt to force their hand, to me. It doesn't make much sense to me to cancel a project that's taken so long and cost so much, when you have even the slightest chance of producing the next big hit. 'Course, I'm not in the industry. Aside from that though, let me continue to pontificate: Why not at least recoup some of the losses by finishing the job?

Scott's official statement:

"Based on the stellar record of accuracy and journalistic integrity that has been the hallmark of Fatbabies.com, all I can assume is that it must be true that Take-Two is canceling Max Payne, and sadly I await the official phone call from them that will close the door on this once ambitious, highly anticipated game. Maybe WizardWorks or Hasbro will pick it up. We can only hope."

Actually, I hate to deny this rumor because it's generating news about Max, and without even releasing a screen shot.

And honestly, I don't know if Take-Two secretly has plans to cancel or not (who can know what's in the minds of Excel-welding execs!). Hey, I really hope they do, because then we keep the substantial advance money we've gotten so far, and get to make a new deal with another publisher and get a *lot* more advances. Take-Two canceling Max would be the best thing possible for us--but unfortunately, I don't think they're that silly. ;)

But Scott, do you deny that there's been any pressure to get the game out?

It seems unlikely that there's a threat of outright cancellation, but perhaps there was an urging to get the game done as soon as possible - 4 years, if it's the right figure, is longer than Daikatana - and we all know how that one turned out.

Perhaps Take-Two is feeling the pinch and needs a product, and a little idle threat or two never hurt anyone, right?

I was not aware Remedy went through team changes on a daily basis? I was not aware Remedy is using old technology?

The only controversy I know around Remedy is the eye logo thing.

Man, I was sorely tempted to post something about this on my awful little site this morning. However, after relaying three consecutive rumors from FatBabies that turned out to have no connection with reality whatsoever, the new "NO FATBABIES RUMORS, EVER" policy seems to have served its purpose quite well....

They're an entertaining site, in a sideshow kind of way. But there seems to be a few accuracy "issues" going on over there....

Nice post Scott, it's all about money
isn't it? Screw someone around for a few
years and then find someone else stupid enough
to give you money for a game that you will never produce. You guys lost your direction
years ago and it's obvious that you can't
make games any more. I guess all those employees who left your company knew a little more about making games than you thought they did....

Even if this is true, it won't stop the game from coming out.

At worst, it will keep the GOD logo off the game - it will just come out from someone else. It's not like a decision by Take2/God to stop the game will STOP THE GAME. It just means they'll pull out.

I've seen several people mention how "stupid" it would be to ditch a project after a couple years worth of investment. OK, I realize that calling everything "stupid" is just what you do on the net, but the logic here is just not right.

It's Econ 101 that sunk costs are just that...sunk. The relevant consideration isn't what you've already spent, but what the future looks like. If, starting today, GOD Games will have to spend more than it will earn to get Max Payne on shelves, then they shouldn't publish it (financially speaking, not contractually).

Now, that may not be likely, if they're actually as far along in the development process as they claim to be, but we just don't know that. It may very well be a sound business move to pull the plug on a project that's 4 years along. PROBABLY not, but to point at all the sunk costs and conclude on that basis alone that killing the project would be "stupid"... that just ain't right.
