SpamLoft
November 19th 2000, 13:02 CET by andy

Is it excessive to send out 700Kb promotional e-mails? Not according to GameLoft...

The international gaming portal, formed last year by publisher Ubi Soft and hardware company Guillemot, aims to be established in 15 countries within the next fortnight. Currently it's only established in nine, which suggests the over-the-top spamming is part of a last-minute publicity drive.

The recent e-mail was sent out to promote 3D chess game Duel Maze and soccer management game TSM, both from GameLoft subsidiary GameLive. It was sent by GameLive's marketing manager, Geneviève Bastien, and included logos, hi-res screenshots and promotional artwork.

GameLoft was created with "the objective of quickly generating massive online traffic" and intends "to become the leading online gaming web site in the world". It has partnerships with several ISPs and games-related sites, including a deal with GameSpy to provide international versions of the Planet sites.

Spamming goes out of control. There are no laws against it and mobile phone users have also become targets.

They pulled a big spam scam here where I live. 400k people recieved an SMS on there phones. The SMS stated "Something has happend, call me back as soon as possible." And a phonenumber.

People who called the number where put on hold for a while and then found out it was a pornline. At $1 aminute.

Ka-ching.

Glad I don't own a mobile phone.

Hi Andy.  :)

Something really does need to be done about spam ... it's getting ridiculous.  It wouldn't even be so bad if it cost them something to send it out, but it doesn't.  So they can spam a million people at absolutely zero cost to them.  What does it matter if 80% of those people are not even REMOTELY in the necessary demographic for the product you're selling.  Who cares?  What does it cost?  A few extra seconds of email server time.

I can't stand it ...

What makes me sick is the spam I get trying to sell me 15,000,000 "fresh" email addresses.  Makes you feel violated.

We live in a time of spam and petitions..
Why should it be necessary to make a petition to stop aimbots anyway?
How bout the softwarehouses just got off their ass and fixed the problem instead?

Sending out a 700k spam mail is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.
Any bets on how long GameLoft will be around?

Where'd they get the list? If, as Not Spam said, it's only to press, it's not spam. It's a press release. A dumb press release (never attach the images; put a link to a server hosting the files), but if it's not being sent to the public it's not a public issue. People in the press will send various e-mails saying, "Um, don't do that" and it will not happen again.

PR people used to do this all the time. They'd send uncompressed .BMP files as attachments because, frankly, they didn't know better. After we'd complain, they learned.

Yes, the only way to eat that stuff is a Spam Burger with a load of other stuff on it trying to cover up the taste.

On to the e-mail spam thing. Spam I don't mind, it take like three second to deside it's spam and  one more to delete it, it's this HTML e-mail spam crap that starting to get anoying. Most of it is pushing 500kb (some like gameloft's pushing far higher), for no damn reason.

Any one that's half way desent at optimizing images for the web would have no problem getting these things under 100kb, then again this is a skill that seams to be lacking most people doing any thing on the web.

Completly off topic, but I find this silly and no one's around right now for me to talk to about it so what the hell. Toys on the WATCH 10 worst list this year, Sesame Street's medical checkup Ernie for including a tongue depressor that a kid could swallow (please lets all run out and ban any thing with a stick), a mock military bazooka for the crime of making noise, and the classic horror psycho saw for being heavy enough to hit some one with.

where'd my damned cookie go??

Hi andy, knew you'd be back.

Now, on topic...

700k is pretty stupid. Anybody on a modem would be dling forever, and would be pissed by the time it loaded.

That said, game related spam I don't mind (but I would mind a bigassed thing like that)

What's worse, spam or junk snail mail? At least I don't have to pay to get rid of spam.

I find it funy that every day I get half a dozen people trying to sell me "ninety bazillion email addresses!!!" And "Your product can reach..." and "Make a million doilars in ten minutes!" One born evey minute I guess.

      Everybody feel the LOVE!
Tuesday, October 24, 12:11 GMT, by morn
You've seen it coming. Well, okay, maybe you haven't. PlanetCrap has mutated into PlanetHappy.
      Feel the love.

Let's see if there's still some room for positivity, shall we? After the group hugs let's do a little
experiment. Let's create a PlanetHappy thread full of positive energy. How it works? Simple: Instead
of the usual mud fights and accusations, let's just all write about the good stuff that has happened
to us lately. Maybe some good games we've enjoyed recently? Maybe report on some positive
surprises? Some good show on TV, or some fun movie in the cinemas? Read any really awesome
      books?

Go on, everybody! TOUCH THE SCREEN and SHARE!

 More typo corrections:

      [41] Gabe Kruger "Chet...said."

[42] Stepto "Now all you gotta do is get Andy and things will be fect!"

[92] Nemo2342 "I voted for Nader, even though my stupid state isn't counting write-in votes"

Obviously a typo as not only is the election not for two weeks, but Ralph Blorgh is the candidate's real name. Can't make out what this fellow really meant.

[94] VeeSPIKE "How is that possible?"

Obviously a typo, as veespike is all knowing and all seeing. I think he meant "how is it possibly they not count your write in absentee ballot"?

[95] PiRaMidA "Hi Caustic Canker, here's your bowel back. I love you."

[96] wabut "wow. now I'm a hippy from beyond. GRAAVY!"

[97] My C0ck In Y0ur AR5E, <B>IS</b> a typo. His father apologizes for shooting his wad on the wall for the sun to hatch.

[123] VeeSPIKE "Your tax dollars at school!"

[124] warmonger "I was feeling sad before I came here, and now I'm still sad. Wanna know why? Cause the bong repairman still hasn't shown up!

      [127] Crusader "MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO "

[131] Charlie Wiederhold "It appears *SOMEONE* is leaking something all over the floor"

[139] Warren Drogs "Push the button Jess! Now!! There, see how the smoke comes out that tube?"

[145] Lumberjack "I used to be conceited, but now I am sober."

[146] Orochi Florist "Here's to hoping it doesn't suck. But games can't suck, because they have no drinking straws."

[149] George Broussard (NEW!) ended the hippie love in at
10/25/2000 07:59 yesterday morning. The Mayor called the National Guard, who came in with tanks and apache helicopters (VE model) and bullet-hosed the hippies, who were all so stoned already that they didn't even realize they had been shot multiple times.

Forty seven people were arrested on drug charges, five hundred seventy hippies were injured, and one of the ten thousand policeman contracted a hangnail, thus making the hippie love in a "hate crime".

All involved were shipped to Texas to sit in George's electric chair.

Not George Bush's electric death chair, George Broussard's electric "help grandpa up" chair.

Of course, writing this was an excersize in futility as everybody has me on "ignore" for breaking their crapspys.

peace.

If Andy is back, can we get the old PC color scheme back, too? Please? :)

Spam mail...horrible stuff. I used to get flooded with it when I was with @home. Since switching ISP's, I've gotten virtually none (ironically, one of the few I did get was someone who scooped up the addresses of people here on PC). The worst has to be HTML mail with pop-ups. It's like having a really bad website in your Inbox.

mcgrew, I'll be damned if I can find your post, but my name came to me off the top of my head. I was going to play Jedi Knight on the Zone with a friend and he dubbed himself Sweet Nancy (don't ask). For some reason, Creole Ned seemed like a suitable "companion".

<QUOTE>Spam mail...horrible stuff. </QUOTE>

Ironicly I got the most spam back when I was on mindspring (after turning on their spam filter). Right now about the closest thing I get that could be considered spam is GSI stuff (yes like a moron I signed up to get the newletter, now the crap comes five or six times a day).

Spam in disguise is the worst kind of spam.

Beware of email coming from GreetKing.com.  Nobody is actually sending you a greeting.  They give some bogus error message in place of the supposed sender's name.  I assume they want to check if the email address is live.  I got a massive increase in spam once I checked the greeting.

Silly me =(

It's my understanding that's how most of the "remove" processes work too.  If you're stupid enough to click the removal option at the bottom of the email, that confirms to them that it's a live email address and you go onto the "active" list.  Which means more spam for you ...

Remember the <a href="http://spamcop.net/">SpamCop</a> folks. My spam has been dramatically cut down since I started using it.

I remember hearing about that a while back as well.  Since then I've never tried to remove myself from any spam list -- I just block the sender.  My hotmail account has at least 250 blocked addresses.

NO, I DON'T WANT A $&#*&^% CABLE DESCRAMBLER ALREADY!

I usually do not get spam from the same email address, so what's the point of removing it(provided it actually removes my address?)

I can take a certain amount of spam. 700kb is way out of the ball park. But, it seems that if users submitted their addresses for emails from GameLoft, I'm just interested in what they believed they were going to get?

Is it spam? Of course not(provided they submitted their email addys). Is it excessive? Maybe. 700kb seems like a lot(and i believe it is a lot), but it is a gaming mailing list, and the user must assume he/she's going to receive screenshots, etc. The real question is, "Is it annoying when someone states question then answers it?" Absolutely not..

<QUOTE>... it's getting ridiculous. It wouldn't even be so bad if it cost them something to send it out, but it doesn't. </QUOTE>

Wrong. There are "companies" specialized for spam. I recently got an email, probably by mistake, they offer these services. It said something like "We have a huge database with over 4 million addresses and we can bring your company to the people.
Numbers:
100,000   $387
200,000   $500
..."

And so on. Now <b>THAT</b> is ridiculous!
I can imagine that some companies are actually using such "services".
