Everybody feel the LOVE!
October 24th 2000, 14:11 CEST by morn

You've seen it coming. Well, okay, maybe you haven't. PlanetCrap has mutated into PlanetHappy. Feel the love.

Let's see if there's still some room for positivity, shall we? After the group hugs let's do a little experiment. Let's create a PlanetHappy thread full of positive energy. How it works? Simple: Instead of the usual mud fights and accusations, let's just all write about the good stuff that has happened to us lately. Maybe some good games we've enjoyed recently? Maybe report on some positive surprises? Some good show on TV, or some fun movie in the cinemas? Read any really awesome books?

Go on, everybody! TOUCH THE SCREEN and SHARE!

I think I broke CrapSpy.

Apart from that, here's some positive stuff I've enjoyed in the last couple of weeks.

Baldur's Gate (1) -- what an awesome game. I haven't really started playing BG2 yet, but I'm aware it's been getting rave reviews all over the web and print mags... however, the original Baldur's Gate is so close to perfect that I'd be surprised if BG2 really surpassed it.

Icewind Dale -- teehee, can you spot the trend? :) IWD is also a wonderful CRPG. It has a lot more combat and a lot less story/dialogue than it's bigger brother, Baldur's Gate, but that doesn't make it any less fun.

I gotta admit though that you can only enjoy those two games if you know and understand at least the basics of the AD&D rules, so they might not be suited to everybody's taste.

The Eye of the World -- I'm probably the only person on Earth who hasn't read the Wheel of Time novels yet. Well, I've just started, and so far I've been enjoying it.

MonkeyRadio -- a shoutcast "radio station". Check it out. Their website is at monkeyradio.net.

I'll try to post some more stuff later...

Bleach, not to break the chain of unbridled happy, but everyone knows that the fine Japanese craftsmanship that goes into each and every Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI ensures that it can out-run shoddy European CRAP HEAPS such as the Lancia S2.

But everyone is still happy after the dust settles because it's just a game!!! Life is just a wheel, if it's even real!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE COULD BE IN DIMENSION X RIGHT NOW IF YOU PONDER IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not only is crapspy broken, but all the in-browser settings (like recording how many messages are new, and your name, details etc.)have been wiped :(

But hell, I'm too fucking giddy with delight at the new colour scheme to give two monkeys! Or even one monkey!

The things I've enjoyed most this week were:

http://www.piginyourgarden.co.uk

Compulsively stupid viewing.

And, ironically:

http://www.somethingawful.com/cliff/ihateyou/

Compulsively cruel viewing.

But by far the most amusing thing was Andy's total and utter demolition in the previous thread, which was enough to bring out the sadist in us all. But the best thing to come out of this feud was Lowtax's clinton/pudding simile - more amusing than anything I've seen on SA in ages.

after 2 cups of coffee, numerous Proxy server questions, and 3 emails off to vendors, i can safely say that this NEW and IMPROVED look makes me feel MUCH MORE POSITIVE!! YOUNGER and MORE DYNAMIC, even...Norman Vincent Peale would be proud of you guys.

best game i've played recently? D&D 3rd Edition; so far, there haven't been any patches released, and it runs great!

I also watched Little Big Man again for the umpteenth time...i forgot how many GREAT LINES there are in that movie.

Well, this thread came at just the right time. In 4 days, 9 hours, 26 minutes, and 37 seconds, I board a plane in Houston bound for Boston. I'm location scouting up northeast, for a new place to live. I must leave the swampland of my homeland in east Texas. The alligators are just getting too numerous.
Apart from that, I just completed the Blair Witch: Volume 1 game last night. It had its quirky moments, but over all it was an exceptional game. Not for the story, really, or even the graphics, and certainly not the gameplay - but it had tons of ultra-creepy moments. The only way to play the game is late at night, with no lights on. Play it any other time, and you lose the effect. I guess this adds to the playtime, too. Hooray.
I read through Stephen King's "On Writing" this past week. Though I'm not a big fan of King by any stretch, he offers some excellent advice on creating good narrative and the like. (It would seem, also, that he does not always follow his own advice.) I recommend it to anyone with half a brain.
After playing Blair Witch, I tried to give Nocturne another chance. It's a fun game, but it's just way too choppy. While my system is mid-level now (p3/500/geforce), it was low-high-end when Nocturne came out and it just galls me. The game is still fun, though, but not very creepy. On top of that, I can't find anyplace local that still carries Matrox G400's - the 'recommended' (ie pimped beyond belief) card for Nocturne.
I think that's about it for now. If anyone wants to buy me a house and give me a job up in New England, feel free. It is better to give than to receive, after all - and this isPlanet Happy!

I would have to agree. I played IWD first, and then BG1. So far, I think that the IWD interface was a bit more… polished. That gives me high hopes for BG2, and everyone I have talked to says its great.

Either Warmonger put some "Wowee" sauce into my foo foo coconut drink or I've died and gone inside of a level of Unreal.

But since everything is running faster than 30 frames per second, I guess Warmonger must have found the liquor cabinet and is paying me back for telling everyone about a certain ninja raid.

I guess there's only one thing to do.

You know morn, this shade of yellow is so intense that when I blink, I see these flickering blue rectangle afterimages.

I feel the love.

Um, best books read recently? Vernor Vinge's "A Fire Upon the Deep" and "A Deepness in the Sky". I liked 'Deepness' a little better than 'Fire' but they were both engaging page turners. Great epic SF stuff, and recommended if you're into that sort of literature.

Movies in the U.S.A. have pretty much blown since July. The best thing in the theatres is "Legend of the Drunken Master" which is really the North American release of 1994's "Drunken Master II" starring Jackie Chan. I saw it on bootleg video years ago, but it was still great to see it on the big screen. Jackie Chan is amazing in this film.

Perhaps if one person takes this recommendation to heart and goes to see Jackie Chan, this color scheme will have been worth it.

Best game I've been playing lately is Freespace 2. Beautiful, entertaining, extremely well done game and puts the Wing Commander series as a whole to shame. On top of that is $20 in the stores these days, everyone buy a copy and feel the love.
