Flame off, baby
October 8th 2000, 16:13 CEST by andy

Good news for unpopular web hacks everywhere! Those lovely people at 3DR and OMM can now sanitize their e-mails with a new feature in the popular Eudora mail client. The "emotion monitor" tool, Moodwatch, scans your incoming and outgoing e-mails and rates them according to flame intensity. For outgoing mail, it warns you of any possible offense you might cause. For incoming mail, it lets you know how severe a roasting you're about to get.

If this was a government/Microsoft (is there any difference?) tool it would be the sort of thing that had free speech nuts reaching for their copies of 1984 and ranting about how we're all living in a police state, but don't worry: Moodwatch doesn't censor you or 'protect' you from anything. It just gives you advice. You're free to ignore it, and if you don't find it useful, you can just turn it off.

Judging by the Moodwatch web site, it does seem a little over-sensitive. The question "Are you nuts!?" in an outgoing mail gets the maximum rating of three hot chillies, along with a warning that it's "the sort of thing that might get your keyboard washed out with soap". If that's what it considers offensive then some of the mail I get should make it shut the whole program down and turn the computer off.

Eudora is available in three flavours: free, not-so-free, and not free at all. Grab it from here. This is not an advert.

Just a warning, Eudora 5.0 seems to be less stable than previous versions.  I've been using it for a few weeks and it tends to lock up and do weird stuff every so often.  I still like it, but I wouldn't pay for it yet.  Run it in light mode.  Of course, you lose a lot of nifty features like moodwatch that way.  And if anyone is worried about the ads in sponsored mode, from what I read they wrote the ad client themselves, so hopefully there's no spyware since most non-advertising centric companies won't put that in.

Bha, such a Moodwatch thingy is useless if you are flamed by someone with somewhat gifted speak. It's not hard to insult someone without actually using 'hard' language.

And I think this nice program only supports the english language so there's another gap.

I do not use Eudora, so this is not an issue for me, and I would not use it anyway. I do not need a program to tell me when I might be offensive - that's what my brain is supposed to do.

I think this is a hilarious feature that has to be the most brilliant marketing concept ever created; it certainly has little technical reason for existing. But Andy's little comment about Microsoft is so true; if this was a feature of Outlook, you'd have civil liberty groups all over the company.

It has no real purpose, it's just a fun little gimmik.  I've gotten 1 flame before, and it had no chillies.  I have lots of non-flame e-mail with 3 chillies.

It might be useful if you're 5, or a religious nut.

At first I thought there is some serious science behind it. Detecting the *mood* of a written text is, as far as I can tell from my little experience, the hardest thing in text analysis (which has way more applications than some email program :) ).

Anyway, white paper of this moodwatch thing shows that it merely is a "systematic study of flaming behavior, drawn from examining and coding some 1,200 messages from newsgroup alt.flame". Oh, ok. Whatever. So it basically detects few predefined word combos (such as "fuck you" or "this is bullshit") which appeared most often in the alt.flame newsgroup. Just a hack, if you ask me, does not have much to do with *mood* watching. They should have called it "foul language detector", and use it for child-protection software...<I><B></B></I><I></I><I></I>

It seems to be just a rude word detector.
I've experimented a bit with it.  I can write an aggressive email, the type I wouldn't mind being checked for, with no response.  But a random set of nasty words brings up the chillies.

It's a harmless gimmick, no rights infringed in any way, but it still needs alot of work before it's actually useful/dangerous.

This is just a stupid dirty words filter, the same as any other.  According to Salon, if you the name "Dick Cheney" twice you will get a <i>potentially offensive email</i> warning.

Stupid.

It's like the UBB code that asterisks-out naughtly words, regardless of context, so on the counter-strike BBS you have all this talk of ****ing pistols.  It took me far too long to figure out that the thread was about cocking pistols, not fucking them.

Which with all the gun nuts that play that game is not too much of a reach....

This is why I still use Eudora 4.  I can send/sort/receive e-mail from multiple addresses, and it's obscure enough that I don't really have to worry about some putz porting Melissa to it.
I don't need a bad word filter-- well, perhaps I do, but I don't want one.  Likewise, I'm not about to "upgrade" to a piece of software that may or may not have active spyware included.  The whole free/not-so-free/not-free thing disturbs me, for some reason.
