Malaysia bans game arcades
October 8th 2000, 14:05 CEST by andy

All game arcades in the southeast Asian country of Malaysia have been ordered to close within two months, according to this BBC story. The closures are intended to curb truancy among young "addicts" and to stop gambling activity, which is banned for the country's majority Muslim population.

The head of Malaysia's teachers union described the ban as "the happiest news to a lot of parents".

Arcade owners are reportedly planning to meet soon to consider an appeal. A spokesman for one shopping mall said the closures would mean a "huge financial loss" and would affect many family entertainment outlets.

The most popular arcade games in Malaysia are said to be "horse racing" and "pornographic poker".

So all the gambling and stuff will be driven underground. This won't accomplish anything at all. Did banning drugs in the US all of a sudden put a complete stop to drug use? Sure doesn't seem like it to me. I'm neither for or against banning game arcades in Malaysia, but I'm just pointing out that it probably won't have much of an effect on stopping gambling.

Yeap, I was listening to the radio a few days ago and the DJ was going on about a 15 year old getting pregnant (you know going on and on about what the bady was going to need, how hard highschool was going to be with a kid at home, how she messed up her life, etc.) another teen girl called in to tell him babies where a great thing no matter what age you are.

I also know of a few others there where trying to have a kid in their freshmen year (with a middle school guy no less).

It's fricking wired to hear and know about these highschoolers thinking having a baby would be the greatest thing to happen to them (and wanting to have it happen right then)then hearing collage age people talking about how they want to wait to get pregnant.

When will people learn that outlawing the places kids go when they skip school doesn't make them more likely to stay in school?

I can see it now. "Well, golly Beaver, we were gonna cut class and head to the arcade, but the arcade's closed. And since there's no other place in this entire city that beats school, I guess we'll just go to chemistry class."

Ruh huh. In Los Angeles we had a huge crackdown on truancy. Arcades had security guards at the doors checking IDs, and police did regular sweeps of malls, arcades, etc. for "school-age" kids (which got fun when I had to explain that I had graduated early). And you know what? Nothing changed.

As far as gambling, what, there are no bookies in the entire country?

Am I wrong in thinking there may be some anti-western prejudice here? Video games=tools of technology=tools of the western, "secular" world..... Maybe I've been watching too much X-files.

Nonono... see, it's that the video games are tools of SATAN, not Western Civilization. I mean, come the hell on. The two most popular games in Malaysia wouldn't go very far elsewhere.

-Horse Racing
Oh, yeah. Watch what happens when Little Timmy does UDRRLLRRDD + LK. Wow! Ultra combo! His horse just tore the other horses' heads clean off and chucked them at the screen! FATALITY! Woo hoo!
I think not. It's horse racing. Not exactly the kind of thing that Squaresoft or Konami would pour a few mil into for shits and giggles.

-Pr0n P0k3r (heh)
At first, it might be a hit with the YOUNG kids. Even then, it's gonna take them about 15 minutes and 4 quarters to figure out that they can download better stuff off the net for FREE.
Plus, hell, why go to an arcade to play poker on a screen when you can buy a deck of cards for 99 cents? Put the rest of the "Pr0n P0k3r" gaming cash into a couple issues of Hustler, and you're set.

No, this ban is solely because in Deuteronomy 25:11, God Himself decrees that Mankind shall not put quarters into games of Video Temptation, lest they have their hands cut off without pity.

Read with me as we explore the nature of things...
Something new comes out and becomes popular. People enjoy it to love it, then love it to addiction. There are laws passed against it, making it illegal. People continue using it, because they're addicted and will do what's needed to get it. A few people are arrested (in comparison to every user), but otherwise it doesn't change a damn thing! Then, usually, something else comes along, often -worse- than before.

See a trend developing?

Feel free to comment.

I'm afraid that drawing the parallel between heroin and Video Horse Racing is a bit of a stretch. Not completely off the mark, mind you.... but definitely stretching enough to classify you as a member of the Fantastic 4.

It's not just the horse racing.

Horse racing is a gateway game. It leads to dog racing. Greyhound races. Then cockfighting. Eventually you have an entire country of juvenile delinquents skipping school to lay wagers on the outcome of video cockfights. This must be stopped.

And they say westerners are nuts.

I'd love to see them bring these games to English-speaking countries. If you thought Japanese dancing video games were strange, wait 'till you get a load of "Gamblin' Greyhounds," the new 3D-interactive dog-racing simulation.

Of course, having said this, my next job in the game industry will end up being a virtual horse- or dog-racing game. Watch.

They did I remember a few years back Horse racing game where you had nothing but a jump button and had to jump the bushes (there was was nothing else), faster times and the machine spit out more tickets to get useless crap (or good crap if you managed to spend four strait months in the arcade, and got lucky they didn't change the stuff or redo the tickets in the mean time).

Ah I have many fond memories of playing Horse Racing on my Intellivision as a boy. It taught me how to wager like a pro.

OK, now you guys have done it, I have to waste some of Morn's bandwidth money on a pointless boring story.

When in the AF I had a friend who had been brought up in a strict Baptist family. Meaning no alchohol, they're almost as bad as the Muslims (Don't flame, my Grandmother is Southern Baptist).

Any way, a bunch of us would all go down to the Airman's Club every Friday for a couple of beers. The Baptist fellow (his name was "Steve", but every third guy my age is named "Steve") would have a six pack down before anybody else opened their second one.

He, a short, skinny guy, would then proceed to try pick a fight with the biggest guy in the bar.

It was what he was taught you do when you drink. Perhaps that's why alchoholics so often have alchoholic parents?

Posession of a console would prolly get you a caning there. Or a hanging. Here it would get you a beer.

Get a big screen TV, Tekken 2 or 3, and move into a college dorm. Leave the door open (make sure the TV's visible from the hall) and kick the computer's ass for a while, eventually you'll have free beer for the semester.
