Bits o' Crap: Timeline, X-COM, Red Hat. And tits.
October 5th 2000, 16:20 CEST by andy

Another round-up of gaming and non-gaming stories...

Timeline, the time-travelling game based on Michael Crichton's book of the same name, will have a puzzling plot point, as explained in this preview: "If you're looking for some kind of first person frag-fest, you'll definitely need to look elsewhere. It isn't like the game is without action, but you cannot kill anyone in the game. That's right, killing people would dramatically alter history." What's odd about this is that people are killed in the book, so why has such a major plot point been added for the game? Presumably it's connected to the controversy over violence in games.

X-COM Enforcer, the Unreal-engine third-person shooter from Hasbro, will only be released in the USA. According to this PC Format story, paraphrasing a Hasbro contact: "Europe simply doesn't offer enough of a market for the game." The X-COM series was created by Mythos, a UK developer.

According to this CNET story, Red Hat are now trying to take credit for the open source movement. The story quotes Red Hat's chief technology officer, Michael Tiemann: "We did start the open-source revolution." The story goes on to offer several examples to disprove Red Hat's claim: "Richard Stallman, for example, founded in 1984 the open-source Gnu movement to clone Unix, and Linus Torvalds piggybacked on those efforts when he began Linux in 1991." Back in 1992, two years before Red Hat was born, I used to upload course-work code to my college network so other people could add to and/or learn from it, so I'd say even I've got a better case than Red Hat. Update: This LinuxPlanet story provides some more info, basically saying that Michael Tiemann's comment should be read in a different context than that portrayed in the CNET story.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One in ten women will be affected by breast cancer at some point in their life. The aim of the BCAM campaign is to educate women on the importance of early detection and treatment. There is no attention given to possible environmental causes, such as pesticides. One of the BCAM founding sponsors was the chemical company ICI, now known as AstraZeneca and represented on the BCAM sponsorship board by the AstraZeneca Healthcare Foundation. AstraZeneca is a major producer of breast cancer treatments. Oh, and they also make a lot of pesticides.

asspennies, recompiling the kernel once isn't that bad. It basically asks you what hardware you have. The problems occur when you have to make <I>code changes</I> to get your system working. Of course, the first copy of Linux I got came with a book that had a chapter going step by step on how to recompile.

Oh yeah, reinstalling Linux is annoying if you had to recompile the kernel in the first place.

Timeline looks Interesting.

About the killing, in the book, Crichton has control over exactly who dies and doesn't, in the game, you could slaughter half the country, which would have quite a diverse effect on the future, right?

Sorry about that first post idiocy, I don't know what came over me =/

Yeah, sure. He probably just does not know the meaning of the word. Evolution - to some extent. Revolution? My ass. I will never forget how fucken pathetic the small cocked individuals who lost their gay minds over me referring to KAK as possibly being fuckable.

Whilst they give all sorts of ridiculous reasons for their outrage, clearly it is their rampant gayness that finds it offensive that a man would find a women attractive.  To them, they are only interested in Felching and replacing Toothpaste with semen, when they brush their teeth.

All that I have written is clearly true.

X-Com not coming here, good old Blighty? Well, <I>fuck you</I>, Hasbro. The game already has a cult status here (at least in crapola game mags) and missing out on a fair few (thousand) sales will hopefully make them reconsider future positions on "No Games For Europe". Or maybe their game just blows.

That quote from Red Hat seems like it might be taken out of context.  I really wouldn't be at all be suprised if he meant "we" as in the Linix/GNU/BSD community which Red Hat is a part of, at least in terms of being one of the companies which grew out of it.  Just seems like everyone is going nuts crucifying the company and the guy for saying it, without hearing his side of it, and based on that tiny out of context snip of words.

A little clarification for those who think RedHat's ego has grown large enough to threaten even the likes of Derek Smart:

<quote>Tiemann said his quote needed to be read in the context of his status as "a founder of Cygnus, which nobody disputes was the world's first open source company." Cygnus Solutions was incorporated in November 1989.

"Red Hat acquired Cygnus and incorporated the first open source commercial enterprise," said Tiemann, who took the position of CTO with Red Hat earlier this year after Red Hat's November, 1999 acquisition of Cygnus Solutions. </quote>

Warren Marshall,

There is surely a certain "robustness" of dialogue that occurs in Plantecrap(And I'm not referring to obvious Troll posts).  I have/had seen this on Planetcrap long before I made that post about KAK being possibly fuckable.

So keeping in mind what often gets said by regulars on this board, why on earth should anyone have been offended by me suggesting that KAK was possibly fuckable???

I'll tell you why.

It is because of chronically immature sycophantic id fanboys who worship Carmack and everything associated with him.  It is also possibly due to most people's immature view on male/female relations.  Most of you losers have never had girlfriends and just beat off to porno(usually, but not exclusively, gay porno), and this has left you to come up with typically skewed id fanboy computer jerkoff, views on the world.

Many, many times people had and still say much, much worse things about developers male & female in this forum, but yet your pathetic fucken rage is mysteriously missing then.

Your worship at the Temple of Carmack is so obvious its a joke.

Now please you fucken mental midgets, don't come back with your ludicrously different examples of asking "Well would it be appropriate to say so and so was fuckable on The Today Show with Katie Couric".  Well I don't know how to break it to you dumb fucks, but there are clearly different rules of engagement for The Today Show and Planetcrap.

This should be obvious as all fuck, but because you would rather worship at the Temple of Carmack, than face the truth, you expose your well lubricated arses(and I'm not referring to Warren Marshall here, I actually think he is one of the better posters on Planetcrap) for any and everyone to stick their cocks in them.

Just answer me this one question, for all those outraged by my remarks about KAK(which also didn't include any criticisms of her), how come you were able to stay silent about the terrible things said about other developers(male & female)??????????

Your silence is deafening.

I do not worship Carmack at all, MCIYA.  In fact, I view the Unreal series in a better light than the Quake series.

I like the Unreal engine more, even though I only have D3D rendering available to me.  It seems like an engine that will still be a good one in the future, and will continually be developed.  The next generation Unreal engine attests to that.
