In the worst case of bad timing since Abe Lincoln said "there's nothing on telly, let's go to the theatre", the recently-acquired Gathering of Developers has suffered a setback of monolithic proportions...

Every Mac copy of Terminal Reality's Fly2k - published by GoD - is thought to be unusable due to a duplication error.

Posting on a flight simulator message board, Fly2k project leader Richard Harvey announced: "It appears that instead of replicating our masters, the duplicator instead copied the files from our master to create their glass master. They then incorrectly created their master in ISO9660 format, making them unusable."

ISO9660 is the CD format used by PC's. To be readable by a Mac the CD must be written in HFS format.

Harvey continued: "I'm in contact with the Gathering right now to determine how they will be handling this. As of right now, do NOT purchase another box from any other retailer; as far as we can tell, all of the Mac boxes are going to be affected. What a nightmare."

What's important to remember here is that a mistake has been made, but in itself that is not a terrible thing. We just have to wait and see how GoD decides to handle the situation. The 'Crap is watching...

(Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865. Television was invented in 1923. Let's just call it artistic licence. That, and shameless theft from Blackadder.)

Are you telling me that no one bothers to examine the product after it gets duplicated and before it gets boxed and sealed? Not even like one or two? Or even the first one?

No wonder they call it the Rapture.

"Oops"... I'm amazed they don't do a test after the master before mass duplication.

I mean, I'm paranoid enough when I write a CD-R for say a backup of my data, that I double-check I have everything set up right, and this is for one or two copies onto a £1 CD... Not thousands of copies that are gonna be distributed across the country.

Yeah I know people are only human, but it still amazes me that they don't have more robust checking in a business environment. I hope the duplicators are gonna pick up the tab and not GoD... I guess it depends on exactly who is to blame, but in the context of the article, it seems that the duplicators messed up.

Exactly... it's hardly GoD's fault. Admittedly, it won't reflect on them too well, and it's hardly good timing, given their recent corporate developments, but it's a cock-up, and cock-ups happen. Here's to hoping they sort out a proper refund system (unlike Gonzo Games, whose game Wipe Out I bought for my ST when I was 10... it never did work properly; not one of half a dozen copies in the shop when I took it back could start the proper tournament mode. So I got a flight-sim compilation instead :)

...that said, I couldn't find any mention of it on GoD's website - just a link to order the game. Still, it was only a cursory glance before I toddle off to a psychology lecture, so I'd hope it's mentioned somewhere :)

How is that monolithic? Big deal, all 4 of the Mac users in this world won't get to play for a bit. Hehehehe. :)

I'm sure they can wait for Halo instead. Or whatever else actually comes out on the Mac.

I'm not disputing that Macs rule for graphics design, but don't play games on one. You'll be spending more money and patience than you want to.

Oh Andy, you did that on purpose. the CD may be unreadable on a Macintosh, but at least GoD isn't run by Jason Hall ( a man who has more press releases than features for his games)

Noted. (My all-time favorite British Comedy and comedian)

"...monolithic proportions"

Also noted. ;)

"We just have to wait and see how GoD decides to handle the situation. The 'Crap is watching..."

If we're going to WAIT and see how they handle it, why post the thread now? Aren't we just trolling for presumptions?

Just promise me that if GoD does the "right thing", there'll be no hints that it was BECAUSE they knew PC was watching. :)

Seriously though, this is a big deal and I'm fairly confident that we'll see GoD handle the situation as well as can be expected. This is a minor nuisance for the public, as they'll eventually get it sorted and get what they payed for...the big question is how many were made and boxed? How much profit did they just throw away?

Yeah, I was SO upset with the movie version of Bane! They could make a film based on the struggle between Batman and Bane and get rid of Robin, Poison Ivy, Iceman, and all that stupid batgirl crap! That, as well as the previous film, was made for 12 year old boys. They need to make a Batman film for MEN, and a Bane vs. Batman would be perfect because Bane is human, although hopped up on goofers, and he HATES Batman. Batman, on the other hand is human as well, but has all those gadgets. If they could make his gadgets more Bond-like, and make him into the bitter, mean crime fighter that he's supposed to be, a Bane vs. Batman film would ROCK, especially if I wrote it!

Ugh... Batman should have crushed Bane right off... But as I recall Bane was messing with him quite a bit. Regardless, Batman would crush Hall. Batman is not just gadgets, but a ton of different fighting arts all rolled together. I'd give it to Batman in 6 seconds.

Bane was all hopped up on steroids that were pumped directly into his blood-stream. Thus making him almost unstopable when he had it turned 'on'.

Okay, this is way off topic, but I have to comment:

Don't hold your breath for a decent film version of Bane. The version that appeared in the Batman Animated Series wasn't bad...about as good as the comic version (I'm not a big Bane fan).

Correct me if i'm wrong (and the disused G3 sitting under my desk says I ain't), but Macs can easily read ISO9660 CDs, so what's the problem (maaaaann! sorry, just listened to never mind the bollocks).
Course, it might cause a bit of grief with that data/resource fork shit that Macs have goin' on, but chances are the CDs aren't completely useless. I mean, I've mug of coffee sitting on my MacOS 8.5 CD, so that's that sorted.
