The Future of Planetcrap's Message Board
January 7th 2012, 08:01 CET by Charles

With Quarter to Three in the process of becoming a forum that no one can post on at all (with a current 1/15th of the posts belonging to banned users), is this finally Planetcrap's chance to regain the spotlight? Will the site revive? WILL MORN COME BACK?

Probably not.

I do find it very interesting the people who have stayed. I wonder why each of us has stuck around this long.

It's a signal/noise thing. I like you jerks and like knowing what you think about stuff. We could all move to another site, but then there would be a lot of people I don't like with opinions I don't want to hear getting in the way. I read Qt3 Broken Forum and GAF every day but I just skim a few select threads. Here, I read everything.

It just makes me sad to see how high some of your qt3 postcounts are. Charles seems to have been the worst. Why couldn't you have said of those things here, Charles? =(

Why do I still read Penny-Arcade's updates? Why do I do anything? I left the site during the first two years of law school but otherwise I basically never stopped reading it. Habit I guess? Boredom? The last few years it hasn't been much of a burden keeping up to date given the low post count.

I agree with Bob (LOLWTF? etc.). I like PC because it's a tiny group of people who inexplicably keep hanging out together. I like seeing you guys on QT3 and/or Brokenforums, but that's a different thing because it's a bigger group of people.

I'm sure there are more complete timelines, but I think the short version is that...

1. Tom went into self-induced exile after some kerfuffle.
2. Things went mostly fine in spite of this.
3. Tom formed plans to make QT3 better serve his career/brand.
4. Tom returned to the forums from exile.
5. Tom announced in what has become known as "the honeypot thread" that he would be banning people under some new rules (which weren't really different form the old rules).
6. Tom announced a batch of immediate bans, and that list contained at least a couple of errors (such as yourself) and a few names that left people going "WTF?!" because they belonged to valuable contributors. Perhaps equally importantly, it omitted several egregious trolls and assholes. (Tom promised that many more "shape up or ship out" PMs had been sent to unspecified people.)
7. Drama commenced in the honeypot thread as people objected to how this was all being handled.
8. Tom said many things, among them that if you didn't like how he was doing things, you should leave.
9. At some point, Lum blew the dust off brokenforum.com to serve as an alternative to QT3.
9. Tom continued to ban people for various reasons, including simply for saying that you were leaving. Many people felt that the reasons for the bans were arbitrary, unjustified, and/or not transparent enough.
10. Brokenforum.com amassed quite a few new members in the forms of those banned from QT3, those who weren't banned but objected to how QT3 was now being run, and those who intend to post in both places.
11. Forum drama continues in the honeypot thread and several threads on Brokenforum.

Some of that is IMO, of course, but I think that covers the highlights.

PC (the site) was blocked at Charles's old job.  I believe he would read it in the evening, but he didn't post much because he wasn't there to really be active.  So he posts on qt3 and in irc.  Hopefully it won't be blocked at his new job.

You should definitely switch to Broken Forum if you want to hang with the PC kids.  Bob, Charles and Zeke were among the banned, but even those of us who weren't banned have mostly migrated over.

Capybara which I know nothing about except that they made Might & Magic Clash of Heroes. Seems like it would be a waste to have AAA guys making 2D games in small teams, and it is hard to imagine one could make more money that way but whatever.

Charles - why the job switch? I was under the impression you really liked your job at ubisoft and working on AC.

Charles did indeed enjoy working on AC.  However, that was a while ago.  Since then he's been in Toronto working on Splinter Cell 6 and some other game he can't talk about.  Apparently the code was garbage, the team was full of morons and the leads were part of the problem, so he got out.  The advantage of going indie is that you don't have to deal with the bureaucratic bullshit of a 400 person team and a giant company.  I imagine Charles wants to feel like he actually has some impact on the game he's working on.

Like I mentioned elsewhere, I talked to the guy who made music for Descent II, Freespace 1+2, Saints Row 2+3, Red Faction 1-3 and he went indie and basically he said
- less money
- more hours
+ more freedom
+ more happiness

So really, the choice is very simple.

Maybe more obscurity too. So you are indie and you have full control etc. and you make DS games? I guess I just assumed that the kinds of games that Charles liked most were AAA games with tons 'o features and 3D 'splosions and stuff. At least a modern Ultima type thing with complicated game systems and AI.

It took me awhile to even figure out how to start the game. You have to be in landscape mode. It struck me as indie wankery and I never played it again.

Charles has been pretty clear in the past that he thinks today's AAA games have gotten so complex and the teams have gotten so large that it's very difficult to have an impact.  He wants to make awesome games and make a real contribution toward making them awesome.  It's a lot easier to do that when you're 20% of the dev team rather than .25%.
