Geek Christmas 2011
November 17th 2011, 06:40 CET by m0nty

TES V: Skyrim, Battlefield 3, CoD: Modern Warfare 3, Saints Row 3, Batman: Arkham City, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Assassin's Creed: Revelations... it's geek Christmas! Insert your most-awaited new releases here if I neglected to mention them (but they suck and you probably suck too).

Just to keep it all in one place. Well, two places, here and The Thread.

Since GOTY will most likely come from the above titles, consider this a pre-GOTY topic too.

What I'm working on right now is Skyrim and Batman: Arkham City. I recommend both of them highly.

I suppose Dark Souls is a missing one, even though that came out in early October.

Oh yea, Uncharted 3. Some people might enjoy that one.

I got Dark Souls for my birthday on Saturday and foolish installed / started it on Monday. I played that until yesterday when it's been SR3 all the time (5 hours so far). I do feel like I should be playing Dark Souls, too.

You can blame both of them for the lack of Armchair.

SR3 most definitely, although I'm feeling a little let down by the game.

Is Skyrim first person only?

I'm done with my day one perch games this season. They were:
Gears 3
Batman
Assassin's Creed.

Now I'll pick up any of the following that drop to $40 or below:
Skyrim
Saints Row 3
Zelda Skyward Sword (to play with the kids in the room, but it's also gotten good buzz)
Dark Souls

And I still have these old PS3 titles on my wish list:
Ico/SotC combo
Ratchet & Clank A Crack in Time (again, for coop with the kids)
Infamous
Sly Cooper Collection
Yakuza 3 & 4 (if can find on sale)
God of War 3

And I'm buying these for my 7 year old's Xmas/birthday gifts so I can play coop:
Lego Harry Potter 2
Kirby's Return to Dreamland

Speaking of boobs, Volition really didn't hold back in that department in SR3.  I was making a busty chick to run around with and I actually had to drop it down to 75 because they were just ridiculous at 100.

The only reason to go into 3rd person mode in Skyrim is to check out how your gear looks, not to play the game.

I swear I just played a mission in SR3 that was over a half hour long. Technically it might have been two missions, but they were back to back and one ran right into another one so it was like some giant mission. Ugh.

Aww hell yeah.

Skyrim will be my Christmas present to myself. I figure by then there will be mods out for the most egregious design flaws. I hear the UI is console-orientated, and by that I mean it's shit.

I would call the menu an improvement over default Oblivion UI, as at least scrolling works (both with scrollwheel and WSAD) and it's got more categories. That said, there's plenty of space for improvement.

Overall, I'm very happy with the game.

Also, I find it funny that they mimicked some HDR effects from Morrowind Graphics Extender (namely auto-adjusting contrast from how dark/light is the spot you're looking at).

Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.

The inventory and spell menus may be labeled as being "alright". Takes a bit of getting used to (and scrollin' - lots of scrollin'), but that's par for the course now. But the fucking skill menu..? DIIEEEEE.

It is the same game over and over since Daggerfall, with just minor iterations of the gameplay systems and an incremental addition to lore.

Not much. It's basically a prettier, more polished Oblivion. There are a good number of changes in the mechanics, sure, but the core gameplay is essentially untouched. (I'm at level 37, btw, after about 40 hours).

I went to a game dev conference (Game Developer Session 2011) and I talked to the guy who was responsible for sound design / music / etc for Descent II, Summoner, Freespace 1+2, The Punisher, Saints Row 1+2, Red Faction 1+2+G and is now working on "AAA indie" game. (I hate how that term became a real thing.)

Anyway, it had some interesting talks and I talked also to one of Adobe's Gaming Evangelists and saw Unreal Engine running in Flash 12 incubator build and a few other games for tablets and phones and browsers and stuff.

Skyrim is good, I like how it took some things from Morrowind and some from Oblivion. All in all, better than Oblivion, haven't played enough to see if I like it better than Morrowind though.

Also, there was a talk on gamification (and I immediately remembered G-man's Gamification Is Bullshit link).

I asked the guy what books on game design he recommends.
He said that it's better to follow Twitter.

The menu system in Skyrim is shit, and it's basically more of the same, but that hasn't stopped me from playing for about 20 hours already.  Jamie, I think the only difference really is menus and shouts which is just a variation of spells.  You won't like it if you didn't like any of the other games.

I'm thinking of getting SR3 on the PC.  Has anyone heard anything good or bad?

Jamie, definitely, if you didn't like prior Bethesda RPGs, Skyrim won't change your opinion.

I still don't fully get the hate of the menu system, but maybe because I'm playing on console? I find it to be pretty damn good. I find it faster to navigate than most.

Hmm, not sure what to say, then. The mechanics are pretty similar across all of their games. If you don't like their brand of high fantasy, then it won't change your opinion.
