Christmas 2010: Christmas Harder
December 9th 2010, 18:38 CET by CheesyPoof

Shamelessly ripped from last years topic:

What will you be buying?  What do you hope to get?  Who do you hope to kiss under the mistletoe?  How will you avoid being visited by 3 ghosts this year, Scrooges?

I lost my Christmas Bender gif and the last few times I searched on the internet for it couldn't find a good one. I'll try that again.

Thanks, Gabe!

All I want for Christmas is my ten days off from work. But with ten work days remaining between today and Christmas, it looks like my incompetent management and incompetent customers are conspiring to try and screw it up just like last year.

Since thoughts of thee doth banish grief,
when from thee I am gone;
will not thy presence yield relief,
to this sad Heart of mine:
Why doth thy presence me defeat,

Speaking of Christmas I do have a bit of a dilemma. My wife wants an iPad, I want to get her an iPad, but the allure of iPad 2.0 coming out is making me waffle. MacRumors says iPad 2.0 (with a fancy 'retinal' display) will ship at the end of February. So, I can be a Christmas hero and get iPad 1.0 now, or say "honey, no cool gifts for you right now, but if you wait 2 (maybe 3) months, there will be this really awesome one."

Isn't there a gift certificate for Apple products you could give her? I definitely would wait for the next gen.

I don't believe the next iPad will have a Retina display. The iPhone went from 480x320 to 960x640. I don't really think a $500 iPad is going to have a 2048x1536 screen.

Speaking of days off, I'll be off from the 21st. Yay!

Whatever, Bob, the display is suppose to be vastly improved. And regardless of that, v2.0 is always a big improvement over v1.0 for Apple.

The three major rumors is that iPad 2 will have a usb port, a camera and maybe not the retina display, but something much higher in resolution.  I'd wait.

I got a Kindle for Christmas and opened it early.  I'm in love with it.

We're giving my son a bunch of Harry Potter lego so I'll be playing with those as well.

To answer what do I hope to get, the big one is a PS3. Enough PS3 only games are out there for me to try the system, at least for a little bit. The games list, since I'm sure everyone is wondering, is: GT5, Infamous, Ico/SotC pack, and for shits and giggles I'll add Uncharted 1/2 to the mix. Plus, my nephews have a PS3 and there sounds like some potential to play games with them online.

I have to play GT5. I have Forza 3, but I cut my racing game teeth on GT1 and GT3 (which I 99.9% ed). I recognize the warts and all, but it is something that I have to do.

I am interested in a PS3 too, but not enough to flip the bit yet I think. My potential games list is a little more extensive though:

3D Dot Game Heroes
Afrika
Ape Escape Fury! Fury! (unreleased)
Folklore
Flower
God of War Collection
God of War III
Heavenly Sword
Heavy Rain
Ico & Shadow of the Colossus: The Collection (unreleased)
InFamous
Katamari Forever
Killzone 2
LittleBigPlanet
LocoRoco Cocoreccho
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
Pain
PixelJunk Shooter
Playstation Move Heroes (unreleased)
Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time
Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Resistance: Fall of Man
Resistance 2
Retro/Grade
The Last Guardian (unreleased)
The Sly Collection
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Valkyria Chronicles
White Knight Chronicles 2 (unreleased)
Yakuza 3
Yakuza 4
Zen Pinball

And then there are all the cross-platform titles and the PlayStation minis and the PlayStation Store titles, plus some PS2 titles I never got around to trying back in the day, etc.

I forgot about Afrika, and I would like to try Yakuza 3 (though qt3 said it was dumbed down for America) and hope Yakuza 4 is good. I'll check out Flower, but have no interest in Heavy Rain.

Holy shit. That reminds me of being 12 years old and making a list of games I wanted to play after reading their reviews in a magazine.

Come to think of it, I can hardly remember *really* wanting to play a game. Last game I obsessively checked the release date of was probably Fallout 3.

That list is just the PS3 exclusives that are of interest to me, not the OMG MUST PLAY list. Still I would probably buy at least a quarter of the games on the list if I had a PS3, and if you add in rentals I might end up playing half the games.

The only thing on G-man's post for the PS3 that interest me are Little Big Planet and maybe Uncharted.  It's still not giving me a reason that it's that much better than my 360.

There's nothing on that list that jumps out at me.  If I had a PS3 I might play Infamous and Uncharted, that's about it.  Maybe Ratchet & Clank.

there is no 'maybe' about Uncharted. Those games are great. I'd argue they are must haves if you have a PS3.

Infamous is also very awesome.

Better games, better online service. The former is still true, the latter is maybe not so much anymore, but back when I was deciding, that was a huge difference.

IMO, it was all about developer support. I think the XBox was easier to develop for and MS has some pretty great tools. Sony made the PS3 too difficult to develop for. Ironically it was Sony's developer support that lured a lot of devs to the PSX from Nintendo. Oops.

I think it was the lack of exclusives all across the board, which was caused in part by the fracturing of the market due to the Wii's massive popularity.

Developer support was indeed a big point I forgot now years after the start of this generation.

I remember Sony's theory, "We can build it however we want, people will develop for it!" which was PRed into "We made it hard to develop for so only the best developers will use it". Which is probably one the worst spin jobs ever.

Microsoft, on the other hand, was all "It's windows, it's direct x, it's easy!". While it didn't turn out to be quite that easy, it was MUCH easier.

That buy in at the beginning paid huge dividends to MS in the long run too. Plus, internet connectivity was a joke for the PS3 at launch. Sure, it was in the plans, but it was a year or so before it even got rolling moderately well if I remember correctly. That turned out to play an even bigger role than people realized.

It's always like this, I mean, Nintendo got biffed by sony by thinking "hey, we are Nintendo!". Sony got biffed for thinking 'Hey, we are Sony." Microsoft is on track to do now, too.

For me the Xbox decision was made when the greatest group of people in the world bought me one.  *hugs!*

But yeah, the starting price on the PS3 was pretty nuts, even if it came out pretty close once you factor in some of the extras for the xbox.

I hope MS doesn't fall down on the next generation. I'm really digging them overall. More than I liked Nintendo or Sony at the top of their power... Microsoft may be just another soulless corporation, but they put on a front that at least attempts to not appear as one.

It's even more amazing considering that the vast majority of the systems sold within the first year or so died and had to be replaced. That alone should have left the whole thing dead in the water.

Yeah, this kind of contradicts what Matt just said.  I love the games, but I don't love MS.  I've never had to get a console repaired before, and I had to send my 360 in four times and then get a new one.  The games are great, but MS are still cocks.

I'm on my third. My friend who bought one same time I did is on his fourth. I'd say it was far north of 75 percent for those first generation units. Which you have to realize were in production for like 2 years, then refurb'd and set out again.
