E3 seems to be back for good, so let's have a celebratory E3 thread
June 14th 2010, 20:05 CEST by G-Man

With E3 2010 set to open today and continue through Thursday it looks like E3's position as the preeminent videogame marketing event is once again secure, having survived the mini-E3's of 2007 and 2008. Activision Blizzard is still a notable holdout, being the only major publisher without a large booth presence, but (relative) new kids on the block like Warner Bros., Bethesda and Disney Interactive have taken their place. 2010 also looks like it will be another year dominated by sequels, with the only publishers showcasing a lot of titles based on new IP or new franchises being Bethesda, Tecmo and Disney. Let's take a look at the titles that are expected to be revealed.

Wikipedia has a nice breakdown of the notable titles being displayed, and Gamespot has an interactive showfloor map as well.

My short list of interesting console titles is Deus Ex: Human Revolution to be published by Square-Enix, Rock Band 3 to be shown by MTV Games, Disney's Epic Mickey, and Sega's new Aliens game. Capcom is showing Okamiden which is a DS based sequel to Okami that is being developed by the same people who did the excellent Wii port, as well as Dead Rising 2. Interestingly Dead Rising 2 is supposed to also get a PC release. Konami's slate of titles seems pretty weak, except for a Rush'N Attack reboot which seems like a fun idea, and a Castlevania reboot which was badly needed.

On the PC side of things (not counting Deus Ex above) the most exciting publisher is 2K, which is showing Mafia II, Civilization V, and most importantly the new X-COM. Bethesda is showing Fallout: New Vegas and iD's Rage, both of which I am kind of meh about. They are also showing Brink however, which seems to be positioning itself as the next Borderlands. Finally, LucasArts is showing Star Wars: The Old Republic again, which I guess someone might care about, and Valve is showing Portal 2 as well as some other "surprise" title.

Turning to the big console publishers, Sony is showing nothing I am interested in at all except the new Ape Escape and the Playstation Move stuff. Ditto with Microsoft which is showing nothing but sequels and Project Natal/Kinect stuff. Nintendo definitely has the most exciting offerings this year, with a new Wii Zelda to show and Metroid: Other M, as well as new hardware - the Wii Vitality Sensor and the 3DS successor to the NDS. Rounding out their showings are Pikmin 3 for the Wii and the new Professor Layton entry for the DS. Maybe Nintendo will also surprise people by announcing a North American release for Zangeki no Reginleiv?

Woo!

So Project Natal is known as "Kinect." Still not something I see myself getting.

DX:HR seemed to be playing full court press last week with a lot of ink on the game. I've read previews on Eurogamer and IGN and I like what I have read. It sounds like the get the game, now all we need to see is that they execute. Early 2011 can't come fast enough.

I'm not much interested in Mafia 2. Arguably the first was a bit ahead of its time but I didn't like the execution. What I mean is that it was an open world game that wasn't GTA, i.e. side missions and sand box outside of the story missions. Mafia was all story missions and they weren't so great. It's only recently, IMO, that open world has become more than sandbox, which is good, and moved beyond genres beyond GTA, c.f. AC2.

Fallout New Vegas interests me. I'd like to play more Fallout, but want a different area than DC. I think New Vegas would hit that bill.

That Wikipedia article has a lot of games, I should compile a list of what sounds good.

The list is actually fairly incomplete because it doesn't mention a lot of the smaller games being shown. It is depressing how many games are sequels too and also how few PC games are being shown. Also, we are seeing a lot more console exclusive titles now that the PS3 is picking up some steam in terms of an install base.

OK, so here's a list:

2K
Mafia 2 -- Will keep an eye on, but won't expect to want it
Civ5 -- Will probably get, but not at launch

Bethesda
Fallout:New Vegas -- Will get unless there's awful word of mouth.
Rage -- Hahaha, don't make me laugh. Oh, too late. Haven't cared about an id game since the 90s

Disney
Epic Mickey -- I'm interested to hear and learn about it, but I don't have a Wii, won't get one. Basically it's a Spector game and I want to see what  he's up to

EA
APB -- Losing any E3 juice since it's on my PC for me to try it out

LucasArts
SW:The Old Republic -- Hopefully there will be gameplay stuff this year. Everyone went gaga over that cinematic trailer last year (which I still don't understand, the gaga'ing that is).

MicroSoft
Fable 3 -- I really enjoyed II and will be getting this one.
Natal/Kinect -- I want to see what they worked on, but I don't expect to want/like it.

Square
DX:HR -- Really excited about this one. I feel myself buying into the hype and really want it to work.

THQ
Saints Row 3 -- I'm surprised to see this on the list. It's supposed to come out in 2012.
RF:Armageddon -- This is going to suck. Taking a step back from RF:G, the question will be how much.

UbiSoft
AC:Brotherhood -- I liked AC2 so I want to see what this is about. Hope it doesn't suck

Valve
Portal 2 -- Give the releases they put out I'm not expecting to see a lot at the show. I'm just glad it's being made, but I hope it wont turn into a TF2 wait.

My Notable Absentees
TrackMani 2 from Ubisoft. They have a movie last year and it's due to come out in 2011. I'm hoping that Wikipedia is wrong and there will some new news.

Criterion/EA. The guys that made Burnout:Paradise haven't released anything (Besides DLC) since then. They're supposed to be working on a NFS title before the next Burnout and there's not mention of either of them. Harumph.

So, there it, my list of games to look at or laugh at. Most of them I'm bullish on, but like anything it will only matter when they're released. Now I kinda wish I did a list like this for previous E3 to see what the promise was and what happened.

Also, E3 will never truly be E3 again so long as Kentia Hall is missing. Truly the best part of the experience was wandering around boggling at the insane creations of people who weren't quite rich enough to own some real booth space.

Interesting, but sadly that ship has long since sailed for me. No LEGO game has been worth a shit since the second Star Wars one.

Saints Row 3 can't be anything more than a video trailer at this point, I'd guess. Mafia II could be interesting from an open world standpoint. Not sure if there's much else on the list I'm really stoked about aside from wanting to actually see what the 3DS is.

Another disappointment about this E3 is that there is still no news about the long rumored System Shock 3 from EA, nor is there any news about Thief 4. Hopefully some journos will get Square to release some Thief 4 info during Deus Ex 3 showings.

I'm still trying to figure out a way the Vitality Sensor could make a game more interesting.  My Wii isn't turned on for months at a time, so this E3 could be the reason I ditch it or keep it.  I was interested in Epic Mickey, but I've already heard two podcasts that basically seem to be trying to say it sucks without breaking their embargo.

My kids might like the Kinect stuff, I'm more interested in Fable 3.

Still nothing from Sony that makes me feel like I need a PS3.

Even though PC gaming is dying, the stuff I'm most interesting in is all on that platform.  New Vegas and Deus Ex are the games I want right now.  Keeping in mind that I love the Deus Ex universe and haven't read anything about this.  Square could screw it up.

I agree. I forgot to add Thief 4 to my MIA list. It's being done by the same house doing DX:HR (i.e. Edios Montreal) which Charles did not have anything good to say about. It's why I'm still unsure of DX:HR, they talk well, but have no idea about execution.

Yeah, the weird thing about Dungeon Siege 3 is that it is being developed by Obsidian ala Kotor II, Neverwinter Nights 2, and Fallout: New Vegas. They specialize in deep roleplaying games involving meaningful choices which is pretty much the complete opposite of what the Dungeon Siege series is about. According to Wikipedia, Obsidian is also working on a new Wheel of Time game. Someone should tell Warren over at QT3.

Fiscal 2012, which means Christmas 2011.  Still, I doubt it'll be anything more than a video trailer.  And who the fuck cares about the story in Saints Row?  If they change the setting, say, 20 years into the future and make it more like Robocop/Crackdown, obviously I'll need to change my pants.  But if it's just more about how you got betrayed and need to re-take your old gang territory and blah blah blah,  I won't even watch.

It's been a while since I finished SR2, but I seem to recall that you'd basically taken over the entire city by the end of it and didn't get exploded on a boat.

I'm guessing they'll start a new storyline, kick it backwards in time (you play as Julius ZOMG), or start a storyline where you're a new gang that has to take on the Saints.

As you said, though, no one gives a fuck about the story so long as there's still plenty of entertaining and crazy shit to do.

So far MS showed Gears of War 3 (meh - has a new co-op Beast mode where you all fight a boss together), a Metal Gear Solid spinoff where you play Raiden with a sword cutting stuff up, a new Crytek game that looks like Gears of War but without the gods stuff, Fable 3 with more of the same but more modern era feeling in terms of setting, Halo Reach which was also more of the same except for now being able to dogfight in space which looked cool. Now the Kinect stuff is starting to be shown.

I heard before that Obsidan was developing Dungeon Siege 3. That's an interesting choice for sure. I'm HIGHLY interested to see what they do with that. What made Dungeon Siege for me is the same thing hurt NWN2 a LOT. The engine. Something about the game loading almost never (visibly) really did it for me.

A bunch of other games I'm interested, but I've become pretty jaded on previews and early shows at E3.

Okay so far I am unimpressed. Kinect is mostly being used for non-gaming media center and communication stuff, like using Kinect as a TV remote, using it for video chat, listening to music, watching movies using voice commands and waggle etc. Xbox Live is also apparently now going to support stuff like youtube, last.fm, facebook, etc. directly, as well as have ESPN and other sports game stuff available on demand. For people who don't have a media center computer already this might be compelling but for guys like me it is same old same old.

It's pretty much a losing proposition either way.  People who do have a Wii won't want to buy a knockoff of Wii Sports or Wii Fit.  People who don't have a Wii either don't care at all about waggle or else will just buy a Wii, because it's still a hell of a lot cheaper than a 360 plus Natal.  If their market is people who already have a 360 and don't have a Wii, that's a pretty small market and mostly made up of people who don't care about waggle.

Very unimpressive demo. Kinect isn't anything I want, the lead demos sucked. There was nothing there for me. I like that the new 360 is smaller and has built in N wifi, but I'm not going to hope my bricks anytime soon.

I'm half curious to watch Sony's presentation to see what arm flapping nonsense they have. I seem to recall being more impressed with their stuff last year.

There is voice recognition, but dunno if game would use it like that. They seem to be leading it in a voice as controller thing and not a voice as supplement to controller.

I admit it would be nice to be able to just say something instead of fumbling through the menu system to find it, but I doubt many games will bother to incorporate it if it's anything more complicated than just plugging in the libraries.

And I love that they pulled an Oprah.

My favorite part about that is that they just publicly tried to buy off every game reviewer in the room, and now said reviewers are going to have to pretend it didn't happen, scramble to give them away (Jostiq is already talking about a contest), or explain why it doesn't hurt their objectivity to keep the shiny new toy.
