Interview: Derek Smart and Alen Ladavac
August 9th 2000, 20:33 CEST by andy

Derek Smart of 3000AD recently announced that he had licensed the Serious engine from new-kids-on-the-block developers Croteam. I put some questions to Derek, along with Croteam's lead programmer Alen Ladavac, and you can read the two interviews over on my own site.

I wonder if it will be like the Nintendo Seal of Quality for NES games.  Which basically ensured that the game would turn on and that the publisher had paid Nintendo's royalty fees.  If you didn't pay for this privilege Nintendo tried to leverage their monopoly and sue you (e.g. Codemasters).

Woe betide anybody that bought a NES wrestling game (yes all of them) because it had a special 'Seal of Quality'.

The Horror! The Horror!

I think Derek is right about the Xbox - better position yourself to get some "gamespace" on that thing, because it could really take the hell off.

I did see a thread over at Slashdot about Carmack's comments on PC versus Console development, and a person made an interesting post about how Microsoft could use the Xbox as a "cheap" PC if they release certain software that only runs on the Xbox, including some add-ons like full size keyboards, hi-rez video monitors, etc..

Soon - you'd see software stickers saying "For XBOX only!!"...and they'd have a lock on hardware (to a degree) and software..

It should be interesting to see how it turns out...for all I know, the whole XBox thing could just be another NetPliance story -- a bunch of Linux people could just format the drive and install the OS of their choice -- voila! Cheap PC!!

Ok off topic but...

<QUOTE>

SAN FRANCISCO, August 08, 2000 - Eidos Interactive, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of interactive software products, announced today the purchase of the immensely popular Thief franchise. Eidos Interactive plans on continuing the series for PC CD-ROM and the PlayStation® 2 Computer Entertainment System.

Eidos Interactive is pleased to report that further iterations of the Thief franchise will be developed in the Austin, Texas offices of Ion Storm and will be led by Warren Spector, who contributed on the original Thief: The Dark Project. Warren has also produced other highly praised titles including System Shock, Ultima Underworld, and most recently, Deus Ex. Several members of the original Thief team have already signed on with Ion Storm to continue working on the series and more announcements are expected soon.

Warren Spector states, "With Thief, LookingGlass Studios created an entirely new kind of game and, in so doing, changed the face of gaming forever. We here in the Austin office are thrilled, proud and a bit humbled at the prospect of continuing and building on the work of the talented men and women who made Thief and Thief 2. Several of us cut our teeth working with those folks, our design philosophies were developed in collaboration with them and, plain and simple, we're fans ourselves. To all the other fans out there, we say: Rest easy. We respect the Thief tradition and we'll do everything in our power not only to live up to everyone's justifiably high expectations but to surpass them."

"This is great news for all fans of the Thief series," states Eidos’ Vice President of Development, Nick Earl. "Warren has proven his game design talents time and time again. The next Thief will undoubtedly be the greatest to date."

No release date has yet been set for the tentatively titled "Thief 3."

Thats cause my exposure to Green radioactive Usenet gnomes has been reduced by almost 95%. I'm focused on my daughter, my game, my company, my fans and my life now. I've got one bad product and one good product. I can live with that. People can be as mean spirited as they want, thats their problem. I simply can't be bothered to take things too seriously anymore because me engaging in kind, only ends up hurting me and making me look bad. Wish I'd learned that back in 97 when this crap all started. A few weeks back, in another thread, Jace posted something that really shook me, as did the 3Drealms guys. So, am just chilled right now, really.

Or, it could just be that I'm getting wiser with old age (?) :-)

From the Croteam website:

<quote>
- Multitexturing

SE supports multitexturing only thru OpenGL extension GL_EXT_TEXTURE_ENV_COMBINE. If the OpenGL driver doesn't support this extension, SSam uses only single texturing. This could have a performance impact if your board has relatively low fill rate (less than 150 Mpix/s) and you're playing at high resolutions (1024+). At the beginning, only nVidia and ATI supported this extension. However, 3Dfx Voodoo4/5 also has this extension, so Serious Sam uses multitexture on those boards too. Matrox and S3 have told us that they'll incorporate this extension soon (in the next version of their driver for G400 and S4/S2K, perhaps?). Sorry, Voodoo2/3 users, but on those boards this extension will never be supported due to lack of hardware capabilities. :(

Right now I am much more concerned about if the game runs or not.  Single player reminds me of Doom (which KISS failed at), and I hope I get play SS for quite a while in single player.  On the test I kept playing over and over, even though my replay value was sinking because of slow ass performance

But I still think they should try to do something about it, look at Q3A, on my computer it runs 30/40 fps, this is quite acceptable for me.  Hopefully this will occur in SS when it is released

With how much money Microsoft has invested in XBox, it's a nobrainer for a developer to ride the wave. Even if the XBox is on an even kiel as Sony/Nintendo/Sega, it will still do better because Microsoft will invest millions in advertising until it does to better. If there's one thing about MS, they don't like to lose and it seems not even the socialistic US government can stop 'em.(that's right socialistic)

Outside of hardcore computer people, MS's products generally have a good name.

"run off the board"?  From what I remember, people just wanted the incessant site pimping to stop ... or at least mix it in with something somewhat relevant to the topic.

Like I just did .... doh!

I remember him from the other thread.  He's the newest addition to my ignore list.  :P

Yep. He's in my CrapSpy killfile, so I don't even see what he's yammering about. Thanks for not excerpting it cuz am not in the least bit interested. Just ignore him and he'll go away.<I><B></B></I><I></I><I></I>

<QUOTE>Oh, so it wasn't your usual legal threats that made Gone Gold knuckle under, it
was that you made the threats politely? </QUOTE>

This is my email, here is what I wrote. I didn't threaten anyone. Joel is an ass, I've know that for a number years. I have no beef with Rich. So, I alerted him to it. As I suspected, he did'nt even know that blurb was up, until I pointed it out.

Rich

can you please tell me what the hell this is about? Joel had this on his hot sheet which was just forwarded to me by someone who came across it on the Usenet.

I categorically object to this sort of classification. And if this wasn't your site, I'd be calling my attorney. I have already spoken to my publishers about this and am awaiting their response. This is attrocious and mean spirited. You probably never saw this and Joel decided to get to the edge of controversy. Since when was your site geared toward this sort of libel, Rich? Kindly have it removed, reworded or Joel will have a lot of explaining to do to my attorney in explaining what exactly he means.

This is exactly the reason why most online gaming sites are getting a bad rap. Rather than report on gaming, some of these guys have resorted to mean spirited, personal attacks, along the lines of the National Enquirer.
</quote>

Here is the mean spirited blurb that Joel wrote. Draw your own conclusions. That was blatantly uncalled for and I wasn't having any of it. I mean, can't you just <b>not</b> post if you have nothing good to say? How exactly have I become poison in the industry? What? Because I don't play by anyone's rules? I don't let people push me around? I don't like people abuse me with wanton disregard, like they do other developers? It certainly can't be because I released one failed project and one good one. Otherwise, I think a good many of the developers in the industry, would be considered poison too.

Why do people have to resort to personal attacks? I mean, seriously. Why has that become necessary. Then, when they get whats coming to them, either in the form of a serious lashback or attorneys, they cry foul.

<quote>
Let's say you're a gamer who was impressed by Croteam's Serious Sam demo. You liked the impressive engine and the effects it rendered. Now, who would be the absolute worst developer on earth to license that engine? Someone sure to repel just about everyone. You might have come up with a fairly short list of developers here, but remove John Romero from that mental list. If you've been gaming for any length of time Derek Smart, creator of Battlecruiser 3000AD is probably at the top it. His development house BC3000AD has announced that they will be creating a game using the Serious engine. It will not be connected to the Battlecruiser line, <b>but the name Derek Smart has become poison in the gaming industry. That alone should be enough to keep most gamers away from this yet untitled game.</b>

Hell, and I don't think a lot of people can really say they do. Rich is one of the nicest people out of all the game sites out there, and should always be respected.

Be thankful that the general public doesn't give a rat's ass about what someone says about you. Do I care if the developer making a game I like is an ass? Nah. (Not saying you are, it's just an example.)
