Video games suck right now (?)
September 19th 2005, 01:03 CEST by Jibble

What games are you playing right now that people should know about?  What about something you're looking forward to that's kind of indie (Shadow of the Colossus)? What about We Love Katamari?  How is it, Bob?

Pretty much just a way to get us a new topic, but could be interesting to find out what people are doing with their PSPs besides playing Galaga.

games aren going to keep sucking if we keep using the same garbage controller... cause then games will all be the same. At least nintendo keeps controllers interesting.

Slack ass, slap face, slack rope, and slap Bass. Fold in a cup of cocaine. Now you have Drucifer's Quintessence.

How can video games suck when there is WoW?

Looking forward to the HL2 add on, Quake4 should be interesting, Chrome Hounds look bad ass, looking forward to Elder Scrolls, the new Hulk and Burnout games will be at my door probably tomorrow, lots of neat indie titles (Bone comes to mind).  Gaming is good.

I believe there's a bug viewing threads if you've got your viewnumberofcommentsperpage thingmabob set to zero, either that or you've crossed a hag recently.

On topic: I'm having fun with Battlefield 2 and by the time (or probably before) I'm done with it there's going to be a whole bunch of new games out to play, therefore I'd vote nay on the sucking thing.

I don't think gaming's in any difficulty.  Civ 4, Supreme Commander and The Movies are all coming out for PC.  And console gaming is a never ending cavalcade of fun.

There really has never been a period where good, new games haven't been widely available.  Gaming suffers from the same problem as music or movies in that people look at the past and think things used to be much better but forget they are looking through rose-colored glasses in which the stand-out games are easily remembered and all the shovelware crap is quickly forgotten.

If anyone tells you there aren't plenty of great new games to play, they are a crotchey old man giving you a new-fangled version of "back in my day...".

I agree with None-1a.  While I think batching things up makes a lot of sense so as not to drive yourself crazy shipping everything in small lots, relatively few people have more than one console, and very, very few have all three current gen systems.

Gaming sucks right now? Advance Wars DS; Nintendogs; Digital Devil Saga 2 (release date pushed back to october. FUCKERS!); The Hulk; Dark Watch; WoW (as always); Civ4; Quake 4; City of Villans looks kinda neat (although I grew weary of CoH really fast); Myst V; Burnout 4; We <3 Katamari; A few Xbox360 launch titles look interesting (Oblivion, Kameo); Ninja Gaiden Black; new Kingdom Under Fire; Ultimate Spidey... just to name a few (looking at the front pages of ebgames.com).

I tried out the Bone demo today, and wasn't impressed. The gameplay was meh, graphics were horrible, and I already know the whole story line. Unless they plan on doing a completely new story (which so far, doesn't look to be the case), I'll bypass it all together.

(although I grew weary of CoH really fast)

Speaking of CoH, I had a really fun mission tonight.  There's an NPC faction of Witches in the game. The spirit of one of their leaders was being imprisoned by another faction, the Red Caps.  Other Witches had tried to save her but had gotten captured themselves, and finally they enlist your team to help.

So you go into a large outdoor instanced mission.  You roam across the land, looking for the henge where the spirit of the main Witch is.  But along the way, you come across the other witches who previously tried to affect a rescue.  If you fight off their guards, they join your team as NPC allies.  Really kickass NPC allies.  Good attack powers, weather control powers, healing powers, etc.  By the end of the mission we had four or five of them.

Eventually you find the captured spirit of the main Witch, and have to fight a running battle back to the entrance of the mission, as waves of Red Caps try to prevent your escape. And when you finish the mission and suceed in freeing the spirit of the main Witch, as a reward, everyone on the team can summon her (like I said, she's powerful) 5 times in the future to be your ally again.

It was a lot of fun.  Also, because of a preliminary mission leading up to that one, we can all now choose the Witch hat in the costume shop, which is very cute.

Quake4 could be good, though the whole 'WWII in space' thing is a big turn-off. There's just so many things that can go wrong with that - what good is getting rid of monster cabinets if the price turns out to be, what, a sniper town? Protection missions?

On the other hand, mechs.

FEAR is looking pretty interesting. Prey, however, looks like a really crappy Doom3 remake. Just because it's the same engine, doesn't warrant looking the two as similar as they do.

The need to be observed and understood was once satisfied by god. We can now implement the same functionality with data-mining algorithms.

i have enjoyed all of 3drealms' latest releases. the screenshot-only genre is the future. interactive gaming is dead.

hi. i like you. do you like me?
#46 by Your Friend

Moving to a screenshot-only genre certainly solves the problem of game journalists that don't know how to take proper screenshots making a game look bad.
