Peak Sports, Bitch!
August 7th 2005, 05:08 CEST by McBain

Enjoy your sports while you can, because after peak oil, professional sports will be a luxury we can't afford.

Also, there are four older topics in the bin that will push the current sports thread off.

Good. I hope that professional sports die a slow, horrible and humiliating death. I am still POed at the NHL. UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR!
By the way...I voted no. Something stinks here.

The thing about voting no on these topics is: if there is no sports topic, the people that wanna talk sports will invade another thread. All you have to do is pretend like this one don't exist. However, I still think that people that don't use the archives are stupid and horrible.

Squeaky is wrong. The thing about voting no or yes is the same - your vote doesn't always decide the issue so much as just hit whatever magical quota of votes PC was looking for to publish.

The thing about voting no on these topics is: if there is no sports topic, the people that wanna talk sports will invade another thread.

And yet, those that don't want to talk sports will gravitate there as well. I'm fine with just invading the last thread of the page, but if there's a dedicated sports thread, so much the better.

Hijack!

I'm replacing my 15-year old venerable Pioneer/Kenwood stereo. It seems Axioms, Athena, etc. are available through Amazon.com, so my 'gift certificate only' bonus can get me some damn good 'high quality but not obscenely priced just to bilk stupid audiophiles' gear. Score!

e-phonk, how would you classify Mackies? Studio only? Suitable for home stereo use? I listen to some very, very dynamic range electronica (Shpongle, Sasha, etc.) as well as more subtle jazz/classical that requires crispness (Coltrane, Miles Davis, Bach). Are Mackies suitable for that, or are they dryer than dirt for a good reason? The Axiom m-22s I was looking at are 'known' for their 'transparency', so is that the same thing?

I plan on spending $1g on the speakers. If I got the Axioms, I was looking at the these speakers and this subwoofer. If I got Mackies, I wouldn't have a sub. Do they compare? I've also looked at a combo ofAscend speakers and a HSU subwoofer. Cheaper, comparable quality, but - here's the gay designer in me talking - not terribly aesthetic.

Also, anyone else here a home audio nut? Any other recommendations or stories? Am I completely wasting my money? This is meant to be a one-time impractical splurge, because, hey, it's free money.

Tell you what, if I produce a month worth of UAC by the end of next week, will all of you shut the hell up about it? - PenguinX, 08/03/05

To be fair:
Joe Hagin, White House deputy chief of staff, and Stephen Hadley, national security adviser, met with Sheehan for about 45 minutes Saturday, according to White House spokesman Trent Duffy.

She got to talk to some whitehouse staff. A cynic would say that her continued protest is merely using her sons death for a cheap media stunt.

OOPS... More like uncoordinated fingers than thinking.
Yes...I can really see the need for a sports thread here. NOT!

It really doesn't matter which it is... a little wing is good but then again a bit of wang never hurt anyone either. I think I may do both tonight.

While I can feel for this mother's plight, her son was a consenting adult who chose his path in life. I'm sorry that things turned out the way they did for her family but he made a conscious decision to serve. I think that maybe she should consider honouring his memory the way that he would have wanted her to.

Yeah, I'm leaning that way myself, Wing. I mean, I get her point, and bush is an idiot. But this guy signed up to serve, period. I don't care if he was a 'weekend warrior' or whatever, you don't sign the dotted line unless you are prepared to get to shot at.

Yep... His life, his decision. Sometimes, kids don't always do what their parental units would want them to but at the end of the day, you just got to let 'em do it no matter how you feel about it and respect them for having their own path.

Was just checking up on an old thread. Any body care to fill me in on Ashiran or Jeet or Jafd for that matter. I hear about them but have no background. If anyone would care to enlighten me about them it would be cool. Also I got a look at "Hoist the Jolly Roger".....I think someone hoisted his whitey tighties up a bit too high. Has he been back since his posts in the " Canadian Thing"?

Ashiran is a young, tall, very white Dutch programmer. We liked to tease him about all manner of things, but he doesn't come round much any more.

Jeet, who I seem to remember is a Texan (although I'm probably wrong about that) appears occasionally in the IRC channel. He's an argumentative chap who can tend to go a bit far in PC conversations, but underneath it all he is a good bloke. Likes Mario and Disney way too much. Has a lovely partner called Katiefly whom he refers to as "the smooth leg".

jafd is a Seattle resident who mostly rubs people up the wrong way, due to various mannerisms and attitudes he adopts purely to piss people off. He is essentially harmless, but you wouldn't know it from seeing the vitriol he attracts. Loves to chat just for chatting's sake. He escaped to the QuartertoThree community some time ago.

The IRC channel is #planetcrap at either irc.planetcrap.com, irc.craplink.net or irc.chromag.net. At various times one or two of those are down, but they all link to the same place so you should be able to get there if you cycle through the servers.

As for Qt3, it is a hive of scum and villainy and sexually transmitted diseases. I would not suggest going there, unless you want to suck up to third-rate hack developers. It's like PlanetCrap, except they talk more about games, but they are much more anal retentive about it which ruins most of the fun.

Schnee,

The mackies have excellent soundquality - so I would suggest them for home listening - but just be aware that these aren't "party speakers", so they aren't perfect to transform your living room in the local club.  At normal levels, they produce excellent detailed sounds.

I'm not all that informed about normal home audio equipment - and I haven't heard any of the other brands you mentioned so I can't comment on that.

I listen to some very, very dynamic range electronica (Shpongle, Sasha, etc.)

I got a brief glimpse of Sasha's set at Dance Valley last saturday. Was really good.
What do you mean by 'dynamic range', though? Sasha is just plain progressive house.
