The Games Thread
July 10th 2005, 02:08 CEST by Squeaky

Despite being in a so-called summer lull, there's plenty of good games to be had. I'll list some here along with some mini-reviews. These are new-ish games from the past few months. Some of them may or may not have been previously discussed in the 'common areas' of the site (topics on the front page). Also listed are some up-and-coming games that I'm really looking forward to.

PS2
•Atelier Iris - Its a 2D, old-school, turn-based CRPG. If you need more convincing than that, then you're horribly broken.
•Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga - Another old-school turn based CRPG. Great dialog, kinda plain graphics, still really fun. Much simpler and more straigt forward than it's predeccessor. You turn into demons and have to eat the corpses of your enemies to become more powerful. Most of the game is spent dungeon crawling. The story is pretty light, but fairly well written and the voice acting is top-notch. Graphics are a little bleh, okay a lot bleh. But gameplay is king, after all.
•Devil May Cry 3 - I liked this a lot more than God of War. I liked the character design, the monster design, and the world more than GoW. It could just be me, but I found it incredibly difficult, even after unlocking easy mode.
•Romance of the Three Kingdoms X - I personally don't dig strategy games. From discussion of it here and qt3, it sounds like people really enjoy the game.
•Graffiti Kingdom - Not to sure on this one. It doesn't come out until July 26th. Apparently, you draw creatures and add attacks and animate them and shit. Sounds weird enough to be really fun.

Xbox
I guess the xbox is all but dead with the xbox360 just around the corner.
•Forza Motorsport - Great fun. Well, great fun up until you start racing supercars. Funny, the whole draw of the game for me was to be able to race Porches and Ferraris. However, in order for those cars to not spin out of control as soon as you hit the gas, you have to spend hours upon hours tweaking and tuning things like tire pressure (front and back), differential, suspension, and gear timings. I'm a complete luddite when it comes to cars, and this kinda thing holds no interest for me. However, every class of cars from D4 (honda civics, etc) upto B1-A4 (Mustangs, Corvettes) are great, you don't need to tune anything if you don't want. There's a good 20-30 hours of gameplay without going into the supercars or racecars.
•Super Monkey Ball Deluxe - No comment needed (hopefully).
•Destroy All Humans - Looks really cool. Haven't played it yet. Warren mentioned something about the missions being ambiguous.

Gamecube
The gamecube is almost just as dead, but there are a few games coming out for it. I've picked up a couple of older games that I'm sure everyone's already played the shit out of.
•Donkey Kong Jungle Beat - Really cool game. Smash those bongoes!
•Killer 7 - looks really stylish and cool. Hugin mentioned that the gameplay looks a little repetitive. Comes out on the 7th.
• Harvest Moon: Another Wonderful Life - I only just started playing the first one, and after some initial difficulty trying to figure the damn thing out, it's pretty fun. This one is completely different... or something. You play a girl and try and woo one of the bachelors in town. Probably will be more of the same.
•Zelda: Twilight Princess - New Zelda game. Very nice looking. Uhh, it's a Zelda game?
•Warioworld - Not to be confused with Warioware. I mentioned this once before. Really, really fun old-school sidescrolling platformer.
•Metal Arms - I picked it up for like $6. I'm sure everyone that wanted to play this game already has.
•Alien Hominid - Really cool shoot-em-up. I mentioned this before as well.

Nintendo DS
Funny, when I first bought this, I kinda regretted it. Not anymore. Lots of great games out for it, with many more on the way. Fuck all ya hatas.
•Meteos - I haven't had a chance to pick it up yet. Seems like a really great puzzler. Apparently done by the same guys that did Lumines.
•Kirby Canvas Curse - Really, really great platformer. The DS control scheme is really coming into it's own with this one. No cumbersome stylus/button pushing/third arm bullshit with this one. Draw lines to move Kirby around the map, destroy enemies, take their powers, collect stars and medals.
•Yoshi Touch & Go - Another good platformer game. This one feels more like a mini-game or a techdemo though. Doesn't mean it's not absolutely wonderful, though.
•Riviera - Well, its a GBA game, not DS. Still, looks like an interesting RPG. Bob tells me there's unskippable cutscenes, though. Which sucks.

PSP
Wow. What a crappy system. Aside from Lumines, and Mercury (thanks, Hugin!), there's really not a whole lot to see here. The launch started out strong, but now the only thing I'm really looking forward to is Death Jr. And judging by the other 2 games I was looking forward to (Smart Bomb and Rengoku), this does not bode well. I guess there's a GTA game for it, which is something... I guess.

What games are you guys looking forward to? What are you playing right now (not including WoW)? What games did you just pick up recently or older ones you've seen in the bargain bins/used shelf that you'd like to try out? Lets talk games, people!

I feel like sko fanb0i if I were to keep going on about how much fun Atelier Iris is, so instead I'll talk PC games. With PC gaming being dead and all, I reinstalled a bunch of old games. I bought a joystick for some sweet, sweet TIE Fighter action a while back. And this morning I loaded up Fallout. I made it as far as Shady Sands (the first village when you leave the vault) before I fucked up a conversation choice and attacked one of the locals. I ended up murdering every last man, woman, child, dog, and mutant in that godforsaken hovel.

I've been buying a lot of older games on sale, and then completely ignoring them in favour of NWN PWs and custom modules and WCIII custom maps. Fate provided a good distraction for a while, but I don't play it much anymore either. I'm also sinking a fair amount of time into Kingdom of Loathing now that they've implemented their "Kill the Neuter Space Bear and reset to level 1" mechanic, and added a whole lot of content.

The only game I'm really looking forward to over the rest of the year is Twilight Princess - but I'd also like to pick up the 2nd Spellforce expansion. Finally, I'd like to get a DS, but I have too many games for too little time already.

Have had some amount of fun with the Xbox release of San Andreas, but the game is hideously ugly by modern standards, and that makes me cry a little.  Also, while many of the new features in the GTA3 sequels are fun when you're just fucking around in a toybox, the story-mode missions have gotten gayer in that they more and more force you to finish the missions in some preconcieved way.  Much of the beauty of the original GTA3 was how many options you had to complete any specific mission.  Now the missions feel really scripted to keep you within in the pre-written story.

Alien Hominid sucks for all the reasons I stated in another post when Funk mentioned it.  Which is a shame because I really wanted to like it based on previews and the idea and because the art is nice (too bad it hampers gameplay).

Donkey Kong Jungle Beat is fun. Looking forward to Next Zelda, still the best videogame series ever, whores.   EOD.

Haven't had a chance to play Meteos or Kirby yet.  Will pick them up soon.  Really looking forward to Nintendogs.  I still can't believe how little there was to Yoshi's Touch & Go.  No matter how fun it may be, with only two real levels to it, the fun doesn't last long.  First and only time so far I've felt ripped off by any first-party Nintendo purchase.   The whole game should just be two boss battles in Warioware Touched.

Haven't touched my PS2 in years now other than to play through Katamari Damacy.

The PSP is a complete failure that only has one game worth playing and the game isn't nearly good enough to justify the system purchase.  Slow load-times on a portable console is unforgivable.   Of the games forthcoming for the system, there are a couple I'm looking forward to, but only as ports on other consoles.  Example? Burnout Legends.  Burnout 3 was great, but who is really itching to play games like that on a portable?  Why doesn't Sony yet realize portable gaming is fundamentally different?  Sony sucks.

I didn't ask for a shrink, that must've been somebody else.  Also, that pudding isn't mine.  Also, I'm wearing this suit today because I had a very important meeting this morning.  And I don't have a crying problem.

Just completed GTA :SA enjoyed it a lot, still having fun in 'sandbox' mode, finding all the hidden stuff, the in gags, the strange stuff, the doing silly stuff for a laugh.

Its a great way to unwind.

Some of the missions *shrug*, people found em hard, I beat 'wrong side of the tracks' (ride the dirtbike alongside the train whilst smoke guns people down') first try and all but the last zero mission first go, still trying for all golds on the bike/car schools tho.

Fun game, well worth RRP.

GTA:SA and BF2. Though lately I've gotten crazy annoyed with the various crap both games forces upon me.

In particular I haven't actually played BF2 since that one day I had bought it, because every time I think about having to manipulate its interface I grow a little more weary. The latest Patch™ supposedly fixes a problem with the serverbrowser (though it still doesn't work for me), but even then the browser is really just part of the battle. Just about everything else in there feels poorly laid out and annoyingly crappy, and it drives me crazy.

Even GTA, honed to perfection behind the fortified walls of console gaming, nags at me rather often with the constant replaying of large segments, lack of saving, obtuse storytelling, etc.

Republic Commando didn't ever annoy me I don't think. Just fun, mixed in with small concentrated spurts of (relative) blandness.

Okay I'm done whining.

Oh how I love GTA, but I must admit that this is true. It was so fun to see how many different ways you could do a mission and still finish it. Seems like all the later mission in SA were go here, do this, go there, do that.

Of the games forthcoming for the system, there are a couple I'm looking forward to, but only as ports on other consoles.

I'm looking forward to hearing about Liberty City stories. I wonder if that will be good, but probably won't make me get a PSP even if it's better than GTA3.

I am playing Thief3. Great fun. I doing that haunted ship next and after that the citadel. I'm a whore for water arrows. If they could let me take 1000 I would. I'm also going to be siding with the Builders, death to the pagans!

Yeah, the graphics do get in the way of gameplay. And I agree with all the reasons you and Funk gave for it sucking. It was still worth the $10 I paid for it, though.

I don't really like SA for the same reasons YF mentioned. GTA3 is still one of the best in the series. Not just for the gameplay, but the 'world'. I still think gta3 has the best sound track of all the gta games. The fact that it wasn't 'real music' (i.e. anything anyone would hear on radio, even indie radio) really made the world come alive.

Republic Commando was alright, I guess. Pretty bland shooter on rails. The helmet effects were cool, I guess. Even though they were lifted straight from Metroid Prime.

Now that the reviews are coming in for Killer 7, I think I'll give that one a pass. Apparently, the designers had no idea what the game was going to play like, they only cared about the story. News flash hotshot: games != movies. Nor should they try to be one. Someone in IRC said that it reminded them of the mid-90s FMV games, which can't be a good thing. I may pick it up once it hits bargain bin.

Battlefield 2 is showing up fairly regularly on my tight gaming schedule. Once you get past the GaySpy server interface, the game is quite good, especially if you get into a squad that actually, you know, plays as a squad. Commander can be fun too, if you have squad leaders that aren't so up themselves that they actually follow your commands. Commander is like playing an RTS that consists of a single 1024x768 screen (resolution may vary from system to system kkthx) where all the units sometimes do as you tell them but most of the time go in the opposite direction, usually into the artillery fire that you just laid down.

My subscription to EVE Online, which has just introduced another big content patch is about to expire and it may very well stay that way for the forseeable future. It's still a nice diversion, but there isn't anything to really keep me there.

I may get GTA:SA one day, but I'm in no rush.

I recently purchased a Playstation 2 just so I could buy and play Gran Turismo 4. While I will say it's the best racing game/simulator/whatever out there on any platform, considering how crap most other racers are, that isn't a huge compliment.

There's nothing else worth commenting on that I can think of.

I used to happily use the server browser in PC FPSes like Quake2 and SOF2.  I think SOF2 is the last PC FPS game I played where the server browser wasn't hopelessly broken.  It is like an industry-wide conspiracy these days.

I've still been playing WoW and I might be able to get a free for life account soon. I'm only lvl 48, I really haven't had much time to play games in the last while, what with buying a new house getting ready to move and finishing up a project at work my life has been busy. I also haven't had an urge to get a new game in ages, and I still have a few that I haven't finished yet like MGS3 and Metroid Prime 2. They're all packed away though.

Like... like a secret, global comspiracy of game developers?

It's not actually that surprising through, it's been a long time since a game came out that didn't completely mess up it's GUI in at least some way.  Really slow loading, excessively complex, unintuitive or just plain broken, I suspect doing the GUI is the job they hand to the new kid.
