Tekken 5 and Starblade
March 4th 2005, 22:10 CET by Matthew Gallant

Who's played Tekken 5 on the PS2? When you boot it up, it lets you play the opening part of the 1991 arcade classic Starblade while the real game loads. Starblade was like a more atmospheric and intense version of the original Star Wars arcade game, with a flat-shaded polygon 3D engine. I wish it worked better on MAME. I almost wish it took Tekken 5 more than five seconds to load. Because even though you can keep playing Starblade until the enemy fleet goes into hyperspace or quit into Tekken 5 by pushing start, you have to stop playing Starblade eventually. Luckily, Tekken 5 is a really good game too. One of Xiaoyu's costumes has the little red and blue drums from Taiko Drum Master on it, which is rad enough, but there's even more radness. Incidentally, the publisher of Tekken, Starblade, and Taiko is Namco, who also published Galaga in 1981 and recently published 2004's game of the year Katamari Damacy. Namco is officially on a winning streak.

I didn't vote at all.  I never even saw this in the bin.  But if I had seen it, I would've voted no for all the reasons listed above.  Except that I don't want MattG to come back.  We already have Warren, who needs an alt?

So when do we start talking about WoW?  I picked up this today.  It's got loads of info about the different lands and factions found in each, along with a good history of the game world and timeline, etc...  Geeky?  Of course - but the Warcraft universe is much, much more detailed and interesting than you will ever grasp from the RTSs and just WoW by itself.  Reading all about why and how a land has become the way it is makes the game a lot more fun to play in.

I was going to get this, but it looked like all of the information that I wanted out of it was covered in more detail by the book I got.  The majority of this book is devoted to the RPG rules and spell lists and craptastic stuff like that.

Blizzard really should issue a book or something that provides all of the rich history of the game world to the players and presents it in an interesting way.  If you're just playing WoW without knowing all of this good stuff, you're missing out on a lot of the fun.

Then again, I'm a strange little person, so take what I say with a large grain of Alton Brown's kosher salt.

My favourite western is probably Tombstone.  It's one of those movies I can watch repeatedly, or just watch part of when it's on TV, and enjoy it every time.  Val Kilmer's performance is awesome.

Val Kilmer wasn't what was wrong with Batman Forever.  That title goes to Nicole Kidman's character, who apparently uses her psychiatric practice as a way to meet rich, emotionally crippled men.

The Saint is another silly and fun Kilmer movie.

Val Kilmer certainly didn't ruin Batman Forever himself, but he was pretty clearly phoning it in.  Not that I blame him because you have to assume he had a good idea of what a steaming pile they were creating... but still.

For more Sergio Leone goodness, I recommend the Once Upon a Time in the West DVD.

You can find it for 10-15 bucks and it is one of the best DVD bargains ever.  Great movie (fully restored) with excellent commentary and good extras.  The credit sequence of this movie alone is probably the best ever.

The Batman movies were pretty much on an inverse parabolic curve, both in terms of the scripts and the actors.  Which is to say, George Clooney is exponentially worse than Kilmer.  It remains to be seen whether the next one can buck the trend.

All the trailers for Batman Begins give me a huge bat-woodie.  I can't wait to see it.

To get this topic back on track, Tekken 5 (like all Tekkens) is a kiddie-fighter, and you can bet your ass anyone who claims to be a Tekken fan is a button-mashing monkey with absolutely no real fighting game skillz.

It looks promising, though.

Movies I'm looking forward to for the year 2005:

Batman Begins
Hitchhikers' Guide To The Galaxy
War of the Worlds (the Spielberg version)
Episode 3 looks to be the most promising new Star Wars yet
Doom, eh, we'll see how it pans out. Apparently the Rock isn't even quite sure which character he's been playing.
Uwe Boll's making a movie about Far Cry. I'll probably check it out because I love Far Cry.

It's the year 2000. But where are the flying cars? I was promised flying cars! I don't see any flying cars! Why? Why? Why?
