It's That Time Of Year Again...
December 29th 2004, 10:29 CET by UncleJeet

Gaming sites across the web will soon be posting their end-of-year reviews and best of lists.  I think it's time the 'Crap joined in on this and got it right this time.  So, without further ado, let's have everyone's SHORT lists of the following, listing no more than three games in whatever categories you feel like - or make your own:

          Best/Worst Games of 2004
          Biggest Surprises (sleepers) of 2004
          Biggest Disappointments of 2004
          Best Art of 2004
          Best Characters of 2004
          Best/Worst Dialogue of 2004

As an aside, I had to put EQ2 up there just because of my ranting about it.  I'd rather have put it in a multiplayer category, though since everything else is single player.  With that in mind, I'd say the console Spider-Man 2 belongs up there in EQ2's place, with EQ2 being in the top three multiplayer games of 2004 along with UT2k4 and WoW.

There are no best games. There are the good ones and there are the not so good ones. I have no category for bad games either. Those are just programs that do not work as they were supposed to, but still, you spend time playing with them figuring out how they were meant to be played.

Hey The Bard's Tale wasn't that disappointing, and I liked the voice acting and dialogue in the new Larry game.

I'm too lazy to do a list right now, but Best Immersion is definitely Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault, followed by Half-Life 2. I guess it depends on what you mean by immersion though. I equate that term with consistency and polish. I imagine you are thinking of something more along the lines of suspension of disbelief. The problem with that approach is that it mixes the category up with Best Story, since you probably tend to be less immersed in a game world when you don't like the story. Pacific Assault and HL2 do the best job of pretending not to be games, which is what that category means to me. I can't understand how you can say that about Vampire or Thief 3 (haven't played Riddick) since those games both break the fourth wall a fair bit, especially Vampire with its tutorials and self-referential dialogue and what-not.

Also your worst games list is ludicrous. Maybe it makes sense if it is a list of the worst games you played this year (even then I find that hard to believe), but to say they are the worst games RELEASED this year is shitcockery.

Biggest Disappointment was definitely DX2. Right on, G.

Best/Worst Games of 2004
Best: Tough one, perhaps, Painkiller and Cronicles of Riddick?
[b/Worst:/b] Doom3, very VERY overrated, and the godamn SIMS 2, MOHAA pacific Assault, NFS UD 2, Prince of P. TWW, Call of Duty UO.

Biggest Surprises (sleepers) of 2004
Hah there was sadly only one surpise this year and that was the Cronicles of Riddick.

Biggest Disappointments of 2004
For me, Doom3 after playing the demo.

(waves piece of paper)
I only purchased a few games this year.

Sims2-- good game, planning on grabbing that expansion pack. I wonder how long I will be on this ride this time?
Everquest 2-- This accually made me cancel SWGS. I had even bought the JTL expansion for SWG but EQ2 won.

JTL-- nice game, not enough for me to do to stay though.

Half Life 2-- I did not buy doom3 but I got this. I can not play it. It makes me sick. I am going to give it a shot again when I get glasses. The lack of easily configured POV made it unplayable for multi. I think I am going to go get UT2k5 some time soon so that I may enjoy FPS again.

I will say that HL2 was supurb and that I am angry that I am unable to stay in the game long enough to see this story. I even tried watching It wile my guy played. No dice, made me even more ill. Oh well. It was still worth the money as he plays it.

That was my gaming year.. boring as hell.

and you also can STFU!

What in the HELL are people seeing in Chronicles of Riddick?  The game is horrible!  Shitty engine, stilted, badly spoken dialog (no emotion, or at least the lines are spoken with no emotion so that they could be generically inserted and mashed together).  Tacked on *ahem* 'RPG Elements' like collecting cigarette packs strewn about in strange places, single-path shit 'conversations', graphics worse than HL2 and Doom3, yet the engine performs worse, no physics, unskippable cutscenes of riddick kicking open grates or climbing into holes.  Sure, if it was released 2 years ago, great, but perhaps with the contrast of playing HL2 directly before it, it was trash.  My God, the score this game got on gamespot has seriously damaged my ability to trust their scores.

I would give the game a solid 6.

I'm angry. I'm very angry, Ralph. You know, you can ball my wife if she wants you to. You can lounge around here on her sofa, in her ex-husband's dead-tech, post-modernistic bullshit house if you want to. But you do not get to watch my fucking television set!

I'm playing HL2 through again on my TV; I can turn on most of the effects that were stripped out of it when I played it on my laptop which defaulted to the widescreen resolution of 1200x800. At 640x480 I can turn on most of the eye candy and it is a much better experience this way.

Doom III on my TV still sucks, however.

What in the HELL are people seeing in Chronicles of Riddick?  The game is horrible!

It's only in my list in a few places where I really thought it did match the category and my opinion of the game.  It was terrific for a licensed game, and better still for being a console FPS.  Still, compared to any other title I listed in any Best category, it paled in comparison.  It was a very mediocre game overall, but still impressive enough in certain areas that I had to give it its due.

I think we're also seeing a sharp divide in people who really go gah-gah for all of the normal mapping and shinies vs. people who want to see a much more subtle look to their graphics.  I personally prefer HL2 and Bloodlines to anything Doom 3 or Riddick has to offer.  I love how restrained HL2 is with its effects and how realistic they tried to make light behave.  Dog, for instance, is only really shiny shiny when it's dark and a little light hit him - which is how it should be.  And, while Vampire is a little guilty of over-shining peoples' eyes, it follows the same sense of restraint (except for trying to cram too much detail in certain maps that kill the framerate).

I dunno, give me ultra-detailed and skilled texture work over splotchy normal mapping with excessive specular raping any day.
